Summary

Exact prompt

# Seeded Monte Carlo retirement odds `input.json` holds the assumptions for a Monte Carlo retirement simulation (synthetic). Write `solve.py` (Python 3 standard library only) so that `python solve.py input.json answer.json` runs the simulation exactly as specified and writes the statistics. Because the random sequence is fixed by the seed, the answer is exact. We re-run it on fresh inputs, so do not hard-code anything. ## Input `seed`, `sims`, `years` (integers), `start_balance`, `annual_spend` (first-year spending), `mean_return`, `sd_return`, `mean_inflation`, `sd_inflation`, `success_threshold` (fractions). ## Rules 1. Create one generator `rng = random.Random(seed)` and use it for everything, in this order. Run simulations s = 0 .. sims-1 one after another. 2. Each simulation starts with balance = `start_balance` and spend = `annual_spend` (as floats). For each year y = 0 .. years-1: draw `r = rng.gauss(mean_return, sd_return)`, then `i = rng.gauss(mean_inflation, sd_inflation)` (both are drawn every year, in that order, before anything else), then balance -= spend. 3. If the balance is now below 0, the simulation **fails** in year y+1: its ending balance is 0 and it stops immediately (no more draws for it). Otherwise balance *= (1 + r) and spend *= (1 + i). 4. A simulation that never fails succeeds; its ending balance is the balance after the last year. 5. `success_rate` = successes / sims (round to 6 decimals). `meets_threshold` = (unrounded success rate >= `success_threshold`). `sims_failed` = number of failures. 6. Percentiles: sort all ending balances ascending (failed ones count as 0) into E; `pX` = E[int(X/100 * (sims - 1))] for X = 10, 50, 90 (round to 2 decimals). 7. `median_failure_year`: sort the failure years ascending into F and take F[int(0.5 * (len(F) - 1))]; `null` if nothing failed. 8. `best_sim` = index of the highest ending balance (lowest index on ties). `earliest_failure_sim` = index of the simulation that failed in the earliest year (lowest index on ties); `null` if nothing failed. ## Output `answer.json`: an object with keys `success_rate`, `meets_threshold`, `sims_failed`, `p10`, `p50`, `p90`, `median_failure_year`, `best_sim`, `earliest_failure_sim`. ## Chart (required visual) Also write `chart.svg` in the working directory: a static, self-contained SVG (root element `<svg>`, no scripts, no external images, fonts, stylesheets or links) that can be rendered headless. It must contain a percentile fan: `<polyline id="p10">`, `<polyline id="p50">`, `<polyline id="p90">`, each the 10th/50th/90th percentile end-of-year balance across simulations for each year (a failed simulation counts as 0 from its failure year). ## Scoring The `chart_svg_static` check (one more check, counted in partial credit) passes only if `chart.svg` exists after the fixture run, parses, has root `<svg>`, contains the ids above with the stated tags, and has no `<script>`, `<img>`/`<image>`, `<link>`, `<iframe>`/`<object>`/`<embed>`, `on*` handlers, or `href`/`src` pointing anywhere except `#...` or `data:`. Its drawing is not graded. Hidden checks (partial credit = fraction passed; all must pass): `success_rate_and_threshold` (rate within 0.000001, the other two exact), `percentiles` (within 0.011), `failure_stats` (exact), `best_sim` (exact) on the given input; `fresh_run_1` and `fresh_run_2`: every key on a fresh input (money within 0.011, rates within 0.011, counts and indexes exact). Each run has a 120-second limit.

With a fixed seed the success rate is exact only if the draw order (return then inflation, every year, stop on failure) and the percentile/tie rules are followed exactly; approximate simulations score near zero. Inspired by https://x.com/allen_lattimer/status/2105321749323841757 Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price estimate (measured tokens x the site's price table).

These are synthetic test cases for comparing AI models, not financial advice.

Success criteria: 1. success_rate_and_threshold 2. percentiles 3. failure_stats 4. best_sim 5. fresh_run_1 6. fresh_run_2 7. chart_svg_static

Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 9 case j02-retirement-monte-carlo (offline fixture). Prepared with the case's setup script; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored automatically with the scout's scorer. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. Visual output (chart.svg) rendered offline to PNG with google-chrome headless, network blocked, 1280x800 at ~3 s after load. Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max 16,000 output tokens per call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.25, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x Venice list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via Venice OpenAI-compatible API (16000 max tokens/call, $0.25 run cap). Score: 7/7. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured per-call tokens x the site's list-price table (paid from Venice DIEM allowance; Venice billing not itemized). input tokens include cached reads. Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Should have drawing not graded besides static IDs. Just need satisfy. Should have exact simulation random sequencing. Use rng.gauss. Important random.Random.gauss implementation caches second value. Fail stops no draws. Each sims sequential. Track all ending balances, failure years, yearly balances to compute percentiles. Memory perhaps unknown fresh input sizes but likely manageable. 120 sec. Could store per-sim list? Efficient structure yearly lists sims*years perhaps large. Should be robust. Input constraints only integers no ranges. Could allocate list of lists per year with sims values; update active sims each year? Simulations run sequentially requirement; can collect trajectories per simulation, then percentile by year. Memory O(sims*years) floats potentially heavy if huge. Could compute fan streaming? Since simulation order mandated, can't simulate year-major. Could store arrays or list per year. Could use array('d') to lower memory and fill. Or collect per-year lists appended each simulation: for each sim produce list yearly balances then append to year_values[y], causing O(sims*years) Python float memory. Could use arrays('d') initialized? Perhaps optimize not needed typical sims 1500 years26. Hidden fresh likely similar. Simplicity reliability.\n\nStatistics:\nbalance float(start_balance), spend float(annual_spend). Each year draw r,i before balance -= spend. If balance <0 (strict) fail year y+1 ending 0 stop. If exactly zero not fail, multiply remains zero; spend updates; next year draw then balance -= spend => negative unless spend zero etc. success ending after last year. Note possible negative growth factor (r<-1) can make balance negative after growth but failure check only after spending next year. Ending balance may be negative if last year's return makes it negative? Rules: if after subtraction below 0 fail; otherwise balance *= (1+r) and spend inflation. A simulation never fails succeeds ending balance after last year. So can be negative if extreme r < -1 at final year (or prior year then next spend likely failure). Keep exact. Percentile all ending balances failed zeros. best_sim highest ending balance lowest index ties. Loop update only >. earliest failure track min year and lowest sim; sequential so update if year < earliest. median failure year F[int(0.5*(len(F)-1))] = lower median (for even count int e.g n=2 => int .5 =0; n=4=>int1.5=1). Could avoid sorting all by sort. failure_years list in sim order not chronological; sort. If none null -> None JSON. success_rate round(successes/sims,6). meets_threshold unrounded rate >= threshold. sims_failed len. p values round(...,2). JSON floats could render -0.0 if negative tiny? Probably no. No requirement normalization. Python round may yield int? round(float,2) float. Input start balance may int convert. best_sim if sims positive. sims probably >0. Could handle sims 0? Definitions divide by zero, not meaningful. Assume >0, years perhaps >0. Should chart self-contained static no external anything. Root <svg ...> with polylines ids. Avoid href etc. Include XML? root parses. Could use xml.sax.saxutils.escape for labels? Not needed except number formats. Build chart with fixed dimensions perhaps 1000x600. Percentile fan using polylines for p10 p50 p90. Should compute percentile yearly balances. Should draw axes labels? Not graded drawing but \"required visual ... must contain a percentile fan\". Should be meaningful chart. I'll create nice static SVG with title, axes, grid, polylines with stroke colors and fill none. Perhaps area fan? They explicitly each polyline. Add legend. Self-contained style attributes not stylesheet. No scripts. No external fonts etc. font-family attribute generic okay? \"no external images, fonts, stylesheets or links\" generic system font not external; can avoid font family or set font-family=\"sans-serif\". Static. IDs exact p10 p50 p90. Should have points attribute each \"x,y\". If years=1 polyline one point technically acceptable. Could include circles? Not necessary. Use points for each year. Scales handle min/max. Balances potentially negative or huge, NaN/inf? Inputs probably reasonable finite. Could robustly handle all equal and negative. For chart scale use all yearly percentile values, min and max; include zero perhaps to show. x from left to right across year 1..years, if years=1 denominator zero handle center or x left? Use n<=1 x=(left+right)/2 perhaps one point. y map with range max-min, if zero flat at mid. chart title and labels. Use numeric formatting with e.g .6g to avoid exponent in SVG coordinate? SVG supports scientific notation? number format likely yes but can format .2f. For coordinates .2f. Text labels using formatted money. Escape perhaps. No need output answer path chart always working directory not alongside answer. \"Also write chart.svg in the working directory\" use Path(\"chart.svg\"), not answer parent. solve.py reads argv[1], writes argv[2]. Ensure output parent? likely current existing. Could use open. Standard only.\n\nPotential subtle issue random.gauss thread no, exact. Use local vars and gauss = rng.gauss for speed? Requirement r=rng.gauss etc but binding same method okay. Should make no other random calls. Conversion of input values: seed int? random.Random accepts. Use data values directly to gauss mean sd; if ints etc okay. start and spend floats explicitly. mean_return perhaps numbers. success threshold fraction. success rate rounding Python. Output keys exactly. Order perhaps as listed. json.dump with indent 2, allow_nan default. Fine.\n\nFan percentile per end-of-year:\nAt each sim, yearly = [] and for each year:\n- after fail, append 0.0 for current year and for all remaining years. Could when fail at fy, trajectory currently length fy-1 previous successful years. Should fill zeros from failure year through years: yearly.extend([0.0]*(years-(fy-1)))? Let 0-index y. Prior length y. On fail current y+1, need append zeros count years-y. Yes.\n- if success each year append balance after growth.\n- if completes, length years.\nThen append each value to per_year[y]. Or optimize maintain yearly_columns = [array('d') for years] and append. array append each. Could build list per sim and append. For chart values no rounding before percentile; use actual balances. Use same quantile function int(0.1*(sims-1)), etc. Sorting each year separately O(years sims log sims). 26*1500 trivial. If sims/years huge chart could expensive but necessary. Main sim O(draws). Could use sorted values and indexes.\n\nMemory O(sims + sims*years). Can use arrays('d') for year columns and ending balances array('d')? Stats best and sorted endings needs list floats or array sorted supports? sorted(array) returns list. Fine. Failure list ints. Use lists simpler. Hidden runtime perhaps sims 100k years 40 => gauss 8m under 120 perhaps. Memory with arrays beneficial. Should think test expected exact chart not graded drawing. I can track yearly columns via lists for convenience. 1500*26 =39k. Fresh likely perhaps 2500 etc. Fine.\n\nCould derive chart percentiles without storing all trajectories by storing each simulation's annual list then process? same. Could use list of array columns, good robust with minimal complexity:\nfrom array import array\nannual_balances = [array(\"d\") for _ in range(years)]\n...\ntrajectory = [0.0]*years? Alloc per sim and fill; after simulation for y,value in enumerate(trajectory): annual_balances[y].append(value). This adds Python loop years. Could append directly to columns during each sim? Since simulations sequential and each column gets one value per sim. At year y, annual_balances[y].append(balance) (after growth or zero). On failure current annual_balances[y].append(0.0), then for remaining y2 append 0.0. This avoids trajectory. Since each sim appends exactly one value to each year column, column arrays align but I only need distribution. On success append each. On fail extend zeros for rest: annual_balances[y].append(0.0); for later in range(y+1, years): annual_balances[later].append(0.0). That is O(remaining), fine. Or annual_balances[y].extend? each column separate, cannot one extend. Could maintain active? no.\nCould instead per sim annual = [0.0]*years; fill successes; after done for y append; same operations. Direct columns easiest.\nEnding balances list floats; append end. best tracking as I go. Failure years. On fail break and next sim. Should avoid duplicate final append etc:\nfor s in range(sims):\n balance = start; spend=spend0; failed_year=None\n for y ...\n r=gauss...; i=...\n balance -= spend\n if balance <0:\n failed_year=y+1\n balance=0.0\n annual[y].append(0.0)\n for yy ... append 0\n break\n balance *= 1+r\n spend *= 1+i\n annual[y].append(balance)\n if failed_year is None:\n successes +=1\n else:\n failure_years.append(...)\n if earliest ...\n ending=balance (set 0 on fail)\n endings.append(ending)\n if best_sim is None or ending > best_balance ...\nAt success after years perhaps years=0: balance start, annual none, succeeds. chart no polylines points perhaps empty.
