Summary
Exact prompt
# Choose next quarter's project portfolio Inputs: `projects.csv` (cost, engineering hours and estimated value of each candidate project, plus prerequisites) and `constraints.json` (budget, available hours, pairs that can't both be funded). Pick the set of projects that maximises total value. - Total cost must not exceed the budget, and total hours must not exceed the available hours. - A project can only be funded if all its prerequisites are funded too. - At most one project of each mutually exclusive pair may be funded. - Then answer one what-if: if the budget were cut by 10% (hours unchanged), what is the best total value achievable? Write `out/portfolio.json`: `{"selected": [<project ids, sorted>], "total_value": <n>, "total_cost": <n>, "total_hours": <n>, "value_if_budget_cut_10pct": <n>}`. ## How this run works - Work on your own: nobody will answer questions in this task, and writing to `ask/` counts against the run. - Write only under `out/`. Create `out/` if it is missing. Inputs are synthetic; don't fetch anything from the network. - Scoring is partial credit: each listed check is pass/fail, and the score is the share passed. Numbers are compared to within 0.005 unless the task says otherwise.
Pick the best set of 15-17 candidate projects under two competing limits (money and engineering hours), with prerequisite chains and mutually exclusive pairs, then answer a budget-cut what-if. The data is drawn so that ranking by value-for-money is strictly worse than the optimum and ignoring the hours cap gives a different set. The hidden key is the unique exact optimum. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price estimate (measured tokens x the site's price table).
Success criteria: optimal_selection optimal_value cost_and_hours what_if_budget_cut
Setup notes: Batch 18 case t01-portfolio-under-budget (offline, synthetic inputs, seed 79379508). Autonomous case: no stand-in user and the agent never needs to check with the user; any file the solver wrote to ask/ is counted as a measured intervention (0) and blocks a pass. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Hidden key kept outside the solver's work dir. Scored on the box with the case's scorer; pass = every check true and no ask/ files. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 0.35 (8 cores). Time-zone results depend on the system time-zone database: tzdata 2026c-0+deb13u1 (Python zoneinfo). Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max 16,000 output tokens per call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.0105, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x Venice list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via Venice OpenAI-compatible API (max 16,000 output tokens per call, $0.0105 run cap). Score: 4/4. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured per-call tokens x Venice list price (paid from Venice DIEM allowance; Venice billing not itemized). input_tokens include cached reads. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

"reasoning_content": "The goal is to maximize the total value of selected projects subject to:\n1. Total cost $\\le$ budget.\n2. Total engineering hours $\\le$ available hours.\n3. Prerequisites must be funded.\n4. Mutually exclusive pairs: at most one project from each pair.\n\nI need to solve this for the original budget and for a budget cut by 10%.\n\nThe number of projects is small (16 projects: PRJ-A to PRJ-P).\nSince the number of projects is small, I can potentially use an exhaustive search or a dynamic programming approach, but with multiple constraints (cost, hours, prerequisites, mutual exclusion), a recursive search with pruning or an ILP (Integer Linear Programming) solver would be more efficient. Since I don't have an ILP solver, I'll write a Python script to perform a search.\n\nLet's list the projects and their attributes:\n- PRJ-A: cost=36, hours=117, value=73, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-B: cost=94, hours=160, value=154, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-C: cost=159, hours=615, value=160, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-D: cost=138, hours=853, value=181, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-E: cost=53, hours=347, value=99, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-F: cost=89, hours=228, value=161, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-G: cost=70, hours=424, value=134, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-H: cost=141, hours=423, value=314, prereq=[PRJ-E]\n- PRJ-I: cost=42, hours=619, value=84, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-J: cost=84, hours=253, value=167, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-K: cost=53, hours=606, value=133, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-L: cost=41, hours=640, value=71, prereq=[]\n- PRJ-M: cost=65, hours=318, value=79, prereq=[PRJ-K]\n- PRJ-N: cost=84, hours=327, value=187, prereq=[PRJ-L]\n- PRJ-O: cost=68, hours=688, value=183, prereq=[PRJ-F]\n- PRJ-P: cost=84, hours=594, value=195, prereq=[]\n\nConstraints:\n- Budget: 456\n- Hours: 2297\n- Mutually Exclusive: {B, J}, {F, N}\n\nBudget cut 10%: $456 \\times 0.9 = 410.4$\n\nI'll write a Python script to solve this. Since there are only 16 projects, $2^{16} = 65536$, which is small enough to iterate through all combinations, but we can optimize it.\n\nWait, $2^{16}$ is very small. I can just iterate through all possible subsets of projects, check if they satisfy the constraints, and find the one with the maximum value.\n\nLet's refine the constraints check:\n1. Prerequisites: If project $P$ is selected, all its prerequisites must also be selected.\n2. Mutually Exclusive: For each pair $\\{X, Y\\}$, at most one of $X$ or $Y$ can be selected.\n3. Cost: $\\sum \\text{cost} \\le \\text{budget}$.\n4. Hours: $\\sum \\text{hours} \\le \\text{available\\_hours}$.\n\nI'll write the script now.",

"content": "The problem was solved by implementing a brute-force search over all possible combinations of projects, as the number of candidate projects (16) is small enough for this approach ($2^{16} = 65,536$ combinations). For each combination, the script verified the following constraints:\n1. **Budget**: Total cost must not exceed the budget.\n2. **Engineering Hours**: Total hours must not exceed the available hours.\n3. **Prerequisites**: A project can only be selected if all its prerequisites are also selected.\n4. **Mutual Exclusivity**: At most one project from each mutually exclusive pair can be selected.\n\nThe script identified the set of projects that maximizes the total value for the original budget and then repeated the process for a budget reduced by 10%.\n\nThe final results were written to `out/portfolio.json`.\n\n```json\n{\"selected\": [\"PRJ-E\", \"PRJ-F\", \"PRJ-H\", \"PRJ-O\", \"PRJ-P\"], \"total_value\": 952, \"total_cost\": 435, \"total_hours\": 2280, \"value_if_budget_cut_10pct\": 890}\n```",
"reasoning_content": "Okay, the script ran successfully and produced the output. I should double check the constraints and the logic.\n\nProjects: 16. $2^{16} = 65536$, which is small enough for a brute force search.\n\nConstraints:\n- Total cost <= budget (456)\n- Total hours <= available hours (2297)\n- Prerequisites must be funded.\n- Mutually exclusive pairs: at most one.\n\nBudget cut: 10% of 456 is 45.6. New budget = 456 - 45.6 = 410.4.\n\nLet's re-verify the budget cut calculation in my code:\n`budget_cut = budget * 0.9`\n`456 * 0.9 = 410.4`\n\nThe code uses `total_cost > current_budget` which will correctly handle the float value.\n\nLet's double check the prerequisites and mutually exclusive pairs.\nPRJ-H requires PRJ-E.\nPRJ-M requires PRJ-K.\nPRJ-N requires PRJ-L.\nPRJ-O requires PRJ-F.\n\nMutually exclusive:\n(PRJ-B, PRJ-J)\n(PRJ-F, PRJ-N)\n\nThe selected projects in the output: `[\"PRJ-E\", \"PRJ-F\", \"PRJ-H\", \"PRJ-O\", \"PRJ-P\"]`\n- PRJ-E: cost 53, hours 347, value 99, prereqs []\n- PRJ-F: cost 89, hours 228, value 161, prereqs []\n- PRJ-H: cost 141, hours 423, value 314, prereqs [PRJ-E] (PRJ-E is selected)\n- PRJ-O: cost 68, hours 688, value 183, prereqs [PRJ-F] (PRJ-F is selected)\n- PRJ-P: cost 84, hours 594, value 195, prereqs []\n\nTotal cost: 53 + 89 + 141 + 68 + 84 = 435 (<= 456)\nTotal hours: 347 + 228 + 423 + 688 + 594 = 2280 (<= 2297)\nTotal value: 99 + 161 + 314 + 183 + 195 = 952\n\nMutually exclusive:\n- PRJ-B, PRJ-J: neither selected.\n- PRJ-F, PRJ-N: only PRJ-F selected.\n\nEverything seems correct.\n\nOne more check on the budget cut:\nBudget cut = 410.4.\nIf we remove PRJ-O (cost 68), cost becomes 435 - 68 = 367.\nIf we remove PRJ-P (cost 84), cost becomes 435 - 84 = 351.\nIf we remove PRJ-F and PRJ-O (cost 89+68=157), cost becomes 435 - 157 = 278.\n\nWait, if budget is 410.4, we can't have the current set.\nThe `value_if_budget_cut_10pct` is 890.\nLet's see if we can find a set with value 890 and cost <= 410.4.\nIf we remove PRJ-O (value 183), value is 952 - 183 = 769.\nIf we remove PRJ-F and PRJ-O, value is 952 - 161 - 183 = 608.\nIf we remove PRJ-E and PRJ-H, value is 952 - 99 - 314 = 539.\nIf we remove PRJ-P, value is 952 - 195 = 757.\n\nMaybe a different combination?\nThe brute force should have found it.\n\nLet's quickly check if there are any other projects that could be added.\nPRJ-A: 36, 117, 73\nPRJ-B: 94, 160, 154\nPRJ-C: 159, 615, 160\nPRJ-D: 138, 853, 181\nPRJ-E: 53, 347, 99\nPRJ-F: 89, 228, 161\nPRJ-G: 70, 424, 134\nPRJ-H: 141, 423, 314 (req E)\nPRJ-I: 42, 619, 84\nPRJ-J: 84, 253, 167\nPRJ-K: 53, 606, 133\nPRJ-L: 41, 640, 71\nPRJ-M: 65, 318, 79 (req K)\nPRJ-N: 84, 327, 187 (req L)\nPRJ-O: 68, 688, 183 (req F)\nPRJ-P: 84, 594, 195\n\nThe brute force is exhaustive, so it should be correct.\n\nFinal check on the output format:\n`{\"selected\": [<project ids, sorted>], \"total_value\": <n>, \"total_cost\": <n>, \"total_hours\": <n>, \"value_if_budget_cut_10pct\": <n>}`\nMy output: `{\"selected\": [\"PRJ-E\", \"PRJ-F\", \"PRJ-H\", \"PRJ-O\", \"PRJ-P\"], \"total_value\": 952, \"total_cost\": 435, \"total_hours\": 2280, \"value_if_budget_cut_10pct\": 890}`\nThe IDs are sorted.
