Summary

Exact prompt

# Work out a library's overdue fines for November Inputs: `loans.csv` (loan_id, member_id, item_type, due_date, returned_on), `renewals.csv` (loan_id, renewed_on, new_due_date), `members.csv` (member_id, category), `library.json` and `desk-note.txt`. Amounts are in pounds. `library.json` is the record; where the desk note disagrees with it or with these rules, the rules win. Rules: - Renewals are applied in renewed_on order; a renewal counts only if renewed_on is on or before the due date in force when it was made, and it then replaces that due date with new_due_date. - Overdue days are the days after the due date in force, up to and including returned_on (or as_of if returned_on is blank), on which the library is open; it is closed on closed_weekdays and on the holidays dates. - Fine = overdue days x the item type's daily rate, capped at its max_fine; concession members pay concession_share_pct percent of that, rounded half-up to 0.01; child members pay nothing. - Write `out/fines.json`: `
<loan_id>": <days>, ...
<loan_id>": <fine>, ...
<member_id>": <sum of fines>, ...
<sum of all fines>}`. `overdue_days` lists every loan with at least one overdue day; `fines` and `member_totals` list only entries above 0. ## How this run works - Work on your own: nobody will answer questions in this task, and writing to `ask/` counts against the run. - Write only under `out/`. Create `out/` if it is missing. Inputs are synthetic; don't fetch anything from the network. - Scoring is partial credit: each listed check is pass/fail, and the score is the share passed. Numbers are compared to within 0.005 unless the task says otherwise.

Compute each overdue loan's open-day count and fine for a public library. Some renewals were made after the item was already overdue and don't count, the library is shut on Sundays and two holiday dates, fines are capped per item type, concession members pay half and children pay nothing. A desk note gets the day-counting and renewal rules wrong. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).

Success criteria: overdue_days renewals fines totals

Setup notes: Batch 29 case h01-library-overdue-fines (offline, synthetic inputs, seed 2912015052). Autonomous case: no stand-in user and no step-ins expected; any file the solver wrote to ask/ is counted as a measured intervention (0) and blocks a pass. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Hidden key kept outside the solver's work dir. Scored with the case's scorer (python3 score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR, absolute paths); pass = every check true and no ask/ files. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 0.49 (8 cores). Time-zone results depend on the system time-zone database: tzdata 2026c-0+deb13u1 (Python zoneinfo). Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-sonnet-5.5: $0.057683. Score: 4/4. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run

 1. Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
 2. Same setup: Claude Sonnet 5.5 (anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5, effort default (no --effort flag) · thinking on) via Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud.
 3. It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: overdue_days renewals fines totals
 4. Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.
I wrote `out/fines.json`. It covers 16 loans with overdue days, and the fines come to £138.75 in total.

I followed `library.json` and the rules, not the desk note, in two places. The note says fines run every calendar day, but I skipped Sundays and the two holidays (20 and 23 November). The note also says any renewal resets the due date, but I counted a renewal only if it was made on or before the due date then in force. I also took the note's claim that children's fines are halved to be wrong: children pay nothing.

Open loans (blank `returned_on`) are counted up to `as_of`, which is 30 November.

I checked a few results by hand and they match: LN-726's renewal on 22 November was ignored because it came after the 17 November due date, and LN-936 is a concession member at 13 days × £0.30 halved, which gives £1.95.

Member totals:

| Member | Total |
|---|---|
| LM-2043 | £52.20 |
| LM-2014 | £39.00 |
| LM-2007 | £31.50 |
| LM-2028 | £11.70 |
| LM-2080 | £4.35 |

The three child members have fines of £0, so they're left out of the fines and totals. I didn't write to `ask/`.",
