Summary

Exact prompt

# Life-like cellular automaton from an RLE file, with a playable page `input.json`: `width`, `height`, `topology`, `rule`, `pattern` (an RLE file name), `offset` [ox, oy], `generations` G, `checkpoints` (list of generation numbers). Write `solve.py` (Python 3 standard library only); `python solve.py input.json answer.json` must write `answer.json` and `life.html` in the working directory. Fresh inputs are generated. ## RLE grammar (full) 1. Lines whose first non-blank character is `#` are comments. Blank lines are ignored. 2. The first non-comment line is the header `x = m, y = n[, rule = ...]`. Ignore its values; the rule always comes from `input.json`. 3. The remaining lines are concatenated with line breaks removed. Everything after the first `!` is ignored, even if it looks like more pattern. 4. Tokens are an optional decimal run count (default 1) followed by a tag: `o` (or any other letter except `b`/`B`) = live cells, `b`/`B` or `.` = dead cells, `$` = end of row. A count on `$` skips that many rows: `3$` moves down 3 rows and resets x to 0. Missing trailing dead cells in a row are implied. 5. Pattern cell (x, y) is placed at grid cell (x+ox, y+oy). For `torus`/`klein`, wrap that position with modulo width/height. For `bounded`, drop cells that fall outside the grid. ## Rule string 6. `Bdigits/Sdigits` (case-insensitive; spaces around `/` allowed) gives the birth and survival neighbour counts. A string with no letters, `digits/digits`, is the legacy **S/B** order: survival first, then birth (`23/3` = B3/S23). Either digit list may be empty. ## Topology (8-neighbour Moore neighbourhood) 7. `bounded`: cells outside the grid are always dead. `torus`: both axes wrap. `klein`: x wraps normally; when a neighbour crosses the top or bottom edge (ny < 0 or ny >= height), its x is mirrored to width-1-x before both axes wrap. A neighbour position that appears more than once counts more than once. (This happens only on tiny grids, never in the tests.) 8. A dead cell with a neighbour count in B is born; a live cell with a count in S survives; all others die. Updates are simultaneous. ## answer.json `{"birth": sorted B, "survive": sorted S, "initial_population": n, "populations": [pop at gen 0..G], "cells_at": {"<g>": [[x, y], ...] for each checkpoint, sorted by y then x}}` ## life.html (checked in a headless browser with network blocked) - A single self-contained file: no external scripts, styles, images, fonts or network calls; under 300 KB. Embedding the initial cells is fine. - It contains `<canvas id="board">` drawing the grid, plus elements `#gen` and `#pop` whose text is the current generation number and live-cell count. - On load it starts animating at least 4 generations per second. - It exposes `window.life` with `reset()` (back to generation 0, stays paused or playing as before), `step()` (exactly one generation, updates #gen/#pop), `play()`, `pause()` and `cells()` (live cells as [[x, y], ...] sorted by y then x). It must use the same rules, topology and placement as above. ## Scoring Hidden checks (partial credit; all must pass; exact): - `rule_and_rle_parse`, `populations_klein`, `checkpoint_cells`; - `life_html_structure`; - `browser_step_exact`: pause, reset, 37 steps; then `cells()`, #gen = `37` and #pop must match; - `browser_autoplay_no_network`: reset, play, wait 2 s; #gen >= 4, #pop = cells().length, no network requests; - `fresh_run_1`, `fresh_run_2` (new pattern, rule and topology; the second also re-runs the browser step check). 40-second limit per run.

Creative follow-up to batch 11, but the animation is checked by stepping it in a headless browser and comparing cell sets against the Python reference. Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is measured tokens x Venice list price and matches the amount Venice reported billing.

Success criteria: 1. rule_and_rle_parse 2. populations_klein 3. checkpoint_cells 4. life_html_structure 5. browser_step_exact 6. browser_autoplay_no_network 7. fresh_run_1 8. fresh_run_2

Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 12 case m12-life-rle-animation (offline, synthetic fixture). Prepared with the case's setup script; the hidden key and checker were kept outside the agent's work folder during the run. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the case's own scorer, the same one the other runs of this case use. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 0.37 (8 cores). Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max 16,000 output tokens per call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.25, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x Venice list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. life.html rendered offline with google-chrome headless (CDP pipe, network blocked): PNG 1280x800 at ~3 s after load; MP4 ~6 s captured at 1280x720, H.264 1280x720. Cost cap: the measured cost ($0.2542) ended about $0.004 over the $0.25 per-run cap on the final call; the run was not stopped by the cap and finished normally. Score: 8/8. Cost is measured per-call tokens x Venice list price and matches the amount Venice reported billing. Input tokens include cached reads.

Yes. \"when a neighbour crosses the top or bottom edge ... its x is mirrored to width-1-x before both axes wrap.\" Could interpret mirror nx vs source x? \"its x is mirrored to width-1-x\" likely nx. Should handle counts 0 impossible live candidate count could zero? Live cells with no live neighbors won't be in counts, thus die unless survival includes 0. Rule digits may include 0 and S0 possible! Sparse neighbor counts only candidates misses isolated live cells and dead cells with 0 births. Dead cells with B0 can birth everywhere including all grid cells, impossible sparse approach unless handle B0. Life-like rules often B/S digits could 0? Full says Bdigits S digits either may empty, doesn't exclude 0. Standard Life-like allows 0..8. Should handle B0/S0 correctly. Most patterns standard no B0. Hidden tests could use weird B/S. Should be robust to B0. A sparse algorithm candidate only includes neighbors of live cells; includes any live cell with at least one live neighbor. Live cells with zero absent (S0 should survive). Dead cells with 0 and B0: every dead cell with no live neighbors births. Should add all grid cells if 0 in birth, and all live cells if 0 in survival (latter if B0 all covers anyway). Could iterate entire grid when B0 to ensure; width*height perhaps manageable per generation. Or candidate set add live cells for S0, and all coordinates for B0. Counts default 0. If B0, dense iteration of grid necessary because population complement-like explosive. Width height likely modest. G perhaps 160. Full grid e.g. 200x200*160 =6.4m fine Python. Live cells. #gen #pop initial 0 n in markup perhaps script update anyway.\nUI buttons calling life methods optional. Include Play/Pause/Step/Reset for playable page. Buttons inline event? network none. Use addEventListener. `button id=play` etc no hidden requirements. Style embedded.\n\nTimer at least 4 generations/sec. setInterval 100ms. Browser throttling headless? active page so fine. Could set 50ms 20/s. Requirement >=4 after 2 sec generation >=4. 100ms fine. Some CI loaded background perhaps intervals clamped to 1000 but >=4? Wait 2 sec then 2 gen if 1s throttle, fail. Usually not. Use setInterval 125ms. Could use setTimeout recursive; same. requestAnimationFrame with steps? 60. SetInterval 100 accepted. On load start. `play()` sets playing true. Autoplay call `play();`.\nReset stays paused or playing as before: reset not call pause/play. Good.\nPlay idempotent. Pause idempotent.\n`step` exactly one generation and updates. No async.\nBrowser may call `window.life.pause(); window.life.reset(); for 37...`. Fine.\n`#gen` text current number, #pop live count. Use spans or divs. `<span id=gen>0</span>`.\nCells returns copies sorted.\nNo network APIs in HTML. Buttons no links.\n\nFile paths and answer JSON formatting. `json.dump(answer, f, separators=(\",\",\":\"))` plus newline perhaps. Sorted B/S list. cells_at keys in checkpoint order? I can build according generation simulation; if checkpoints unsorted, keys ascending generation, semantic exact. JSON object ordering likely ignored. User exact perhaps compare parsed. Good.\nUse `ensure_ascii` no issues.\n\nPerhaps include only standard lib imports sys, json,re,pathlib? os. Use open.\n\nI'll generate output on current input to inspect and test JS; perhaps node installed. Tools run shell. I'll write solve.py."

I'll deeply review parser and JavaScript numeric key collision or negative key. For topology bounded positions valid; all cells valid. `key=y*W+x`. Fine for x>=0. In evolve neighbors after wrap valid. Duplicate neighbors tiny counts. B0 special duplicates? next perhaps duplicates if counts candidate alive and then survival0? If count map has count0 impossible for any in counts because counts entries increments >=1, so no duplicates. Birth0 loops no counts and dead. sorted at end. Good.\n\nB0 and survival0 Python sorted. Fine.\n\nAnswer population gen0..G yes.\n\nRule sorted numeric.\n\nRLE grammar token count tags:\n\"o (or any other letter except b/B)\" means any letter, uppercase B dead, lowercase b dead. I allow all ASCII alphabet. `.` dead. Optional decimal run count. Dead cells and `$`. Header ignore. Concatenation with line breaks removed; I append lines and skip whitespace char including newlines. Other whitespace might be intended ignored? no harm.\nEverything after first ! ignored even more pattern. I break body reading, comments after no effect. If `!` in header? first noncomment line is header, not pattern. ignore header. Good.\nFirst noncomment line header could have leading BOM, encoding handles. Good.\nBlank lines ignored. Inline comments? Not specified so no.\n\nOffset wrapping initial with width/height. For klein initial placement same modulo, no mirroring when y wrap? Rule says \"For torus/klein, wrap that position with modulo width/height.\" I do no mirror good.\n\nRLE repeated live wrap duplicate remains set. Population count n unique. yes.\n\nKlein neighbor: \"when a neighbour crosses the top or bottom edge (ny < 0 or ny >= height), its x is mirrored to width-1-x before both axes wrap.\" I check unwrapped ny. x wraps normally even no y crossing. yes. Both axes wrap after. Correct. Multiplicity counts dict increments per dxdy, including same position. yes.\n\nPotential integer width huge leads JS key >2^53 and precision collisions, but grids realistic and under html. no.\n\n40 sec performance. Python B0 dense can be slow if grid enormous but any dense response checkpoints potentially huge. Typical tests small. JS interval evolves sparse. Fine.\n\nCould improve parse_rule spaces around slash but `re.sub` permits arbitrary. Fine.\n\nOne thing: `parse_rle` uses variable `ended` weird no effect, unnecessary but not bug. Clean optional.\nOne issue: when body has a tag after count with whitespace, code processes count okay. When whitespace between digits e.g \"1 0o\", code treats 10 though invalid input irrelevant. Negative no.\nUnknown char raises.\n\nNo external font: CSS `font-family:system-ui,sans-serif` uses local fonts not external. okay.\n\"no external scripts, styles, images, fonts or network calls\" no link or URL. canvas no external. Buttons no form. Chrome may file favicon network? Headless network tests listen request, browser often requests favicon for http but self-contained file served perhaps browser requests favicon automatically? They might count page network requests only after load? Standard tests no network calls likely route and check JS initiated; browser can request favicon. To avoid favicon network could add `<link rel=\"icon\" href=\"data:,\">` but \"no external images\" data okay; no need. Most tasks accepted HTML. If served HTTP headless browser Chrome might request favicon and no external? Network requests to same server may be counted? Usually page.on request captures initial and data; hidden no_network likely check http besides document. Could embed data favicon to avoid /favicon.ico. Should I add `<link rel=\"icon\" href=\"data:,\">` self-contained no network. It is an external? data URI internal. Fine optional. Single self-contained under300KB.\n\n\"On load it starts animating at least 4 generations per second.\" setInterval step100 and playing true. CSS and code sync negligible. yes.\n\nBrowser step exact pause reset 37. `pause` clears. reset no step. initial clones. gen0 pop correct. Step exactly one even playing if not paused but they pause. yes.\n\n`play()` when paused starts; when already playing return prevents duplicate. reset doesn't alter. good.\n\ncells sorted initially `ordered_cells`; evolve sorts. reset initial sorted. returned clones. yes.\n\nPotential JavaScript data replacement bug if initial JSON contains \"__...\" no numbers only. topology no weird. fine.\nOutput html uses literal `</script>` only code. no user strings except topology constrained. safe.\n\nCanvas board element exact. #gen pop current. `textContent` number strings. good.\nNo dimensions labels? irrelevant.\n\nWould hidden inspect HTML contains canvas id exact yes `<canvas id=\"board\" width=...`.\nPerhaps checker searches script for `window.life` methods names. yes.\n\nCould respond concise. But requirement complete task fully no asking. I have done. Should perhaps run fresh run tests to ensure generated input patterns and rule/topology, as scoring fresh. Create temporary dir copies solve and test three custom with Node? I can do quick integration with custom rules legacy and bounded/torus, negative offset, checkpoints. This would bolster. Avoid leaving extraneous files current (only solve answer life existing okay). I can test temp. Should have no unnecessary tools but fine. Might discover bug answer JS with empty lists replace works. Test custom B/S B0 Node perhaps expensive but small. Rule no letters legacy tested Python but not html. Should work.\n\nPotential B0 rule JS evolve `next.sort` etc. answer at37 perhaps huge but small. Browser performance. Fine.\n\nOne potential issue with B0 in sparse JS: `counts` includes all neighbors, B0 only applies isolated dead cells, good. Python same. On bounded when cells outside counts? all positions valid. fine.\n\nPotential population exact if RLE uses letters `s` etc. okay.\n\nQuestion: Is pattern cell x reset after a `$` to0, even concatenated row lines? yes. x resets.\nNo `$` at very end? okay.\nCounts on `.` accepted.\n`count` zero on live does no add x unchanged; `$` zero resets x. good.\n`count` huge loops could expensive but expected reasonable. Can optimize run additions using range. done.\n\nOne issue initial population for wrapping runs overlapping: set correct. At different y but modulo could overlap yes set.\n\nOne issue answer checkpoints if checkpoint appears beyond G not included. Spec list of generation numbers presumably within. Fine. Could user expect all even beyond? Can't without compute beyond G? Usually checkpoints <=G. no.\n\nCould checkpoint negative? no.\n\nPerhaps generations can be0: populations gen0, HTML fine, loop none. checkpoints0. yes.\n\nTopology config might uppercase, lower handles. Rule lower handles. offset strings? JSON numbers expected.\n\nFresh run's working directory contains previous life.html but overwritten yes.\nAnswer path arbitrary uses open. life always current. yes.\nEncoding no stdlib ext. yes.\nNo internet.\n\nI could remove sample answer/life? Task expects output sample likely okay. User asks write solve and must write answer and life, generated outputs good. Keep.\n\nOne thought scoring partial credit \"all must pass exact\" perhaps User expects no additional keys in answer; mine exactly five. order not matter. Pop ints. Good.\n\nWhat is current date weird ls Oct29 irrelevant.\n\nPerhaps direct independent compare sample with dense entire160 to validate optimized advance and klein. I did random only special rules and one known. Sample B36/S23 not dense compared except algorithm straightforward. Could consider compression or representing initial set via RLE to reduce worst-case, but initial dense JSON coordinate arrays could exceed300 KB for large grids. They likely dimensions 40-100. Yet task says under300KB absolute; robust solution should ensure by more compact encoding initial cells. Could embed flat numeric indices JSON rather than pairs, reducing size, then JS convert. Could embed initial cells as RLE-like integer indices or string. A self-contained HTML with JS can reconstruct. Use JSON list of flattened indices, max digits perhaps similar 7 vs10. Could embed initial cells in ASCII base64 bitset requiring WH/6 characters, for 300x300 15KB; for1000x1000 167KB plus code. Standard library base64 available; JS atob built-in no network. But atob might be considered okay. Initial bitset base64 for grid up to~1.7 million cells under300KB. More complexity but manageable.
