Summary
Exact prompt
# Task: make the JSON Patch module correct `patch.js` (CommonJS, Node.js 20) exports `apply(doc, ops)` and `PatchError`. It applies a JSON Patch (a list of operations) to a JSON document, but it mutates its inputs, mishandles pointers and array indexes, and throws inconsistent errors. Fix it (rewrite freely) so it implements `PATCH_SPEC.md` exactly. No dependencies beyond Node.js 20 built-ins; no network. Keep the exports. The grader runs a hidden `node --test` suite against your `patch.js`. If you add your own tests in a `test/` folder they must pass too (`node --test test/`).
The starting module mutates inputs, has no error codes, treats inherited properties as present (prototype pollution via __proto__), mishandles '-', leading zeros and out-of-range indexes, and uses shallow ===. Every case asserts an exact result or (code, index). Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).
Success criteria: 1. hidden_tests_pass: all 11 hidden node:test cases pass. 2. own_tests_pass_or_absent: the agent's test/ (if any) passes.
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 7 case g11-js-json-patch (offline fixture). Prepared with batch7/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring: 4.57. Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-opus-5.5: $0.319926. Score: 11/11. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run
- Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
- Same setup: Claude Opus 5.5 (anthropic/claude-opus-5.5, effort default (no --effort flag) · thinking on) via
Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. hidden_tests_pass: all 11 hidden node:test cases pass. 2. own_tests_pass_or_absent: the agent's test/ (if any) passes.
- Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

"result": "I rewrote `patch.js` to follow `PATCH_SPEC.md` and added tests in `test/patch.test.js`. `node --test test/` passes all 9 tests; I can't see the grader's hidden suite, so I haven't run that.\n\n**How it works now:**\n- **Inputs are never changed.** `apply` deep-copies `doc` once and works only on that copy. Every `value` it adds, and every `copy`, is also deep-copied. If an operation fails, the copy is thrown away, so the original document is untouched.\n- **Pointers** must be `\"\"` or start with `/`, otherwise `BAD_POINTER`. Escapes are decoded in the spec's order (`~1` to `/`, then `~0` to `~`).\n- **Objects** only see their own members, so names like `constructor` or `toString` give `PATH_NOT_FOUND`. A member called `__proto__` is stored as a normal property and never changes a prototype, including when it appears in the input document.\n- **Array indexes:**\n - Malformed tokens like `01`, `-1`, `1e2` or `x` give `BAD_INDEX`.\n - `-` is only allowed at the end of an `add` path or a `move`/`copy` target path.\n - `add` may use an index equal to the length (append); anything larger gives `BAD_INDEX`.\n - Every other out-of-range index gives `PATH_NOT_FOUND`.\n- **Errors** are always a `PatchError` with `code` and `index` set. `test` uses a deep equality check, and malformed operations give `BAD_OP`.\n\n**Choices where the spec is silent:**\n- **`move` checks:** `from` must exist before anything else. So a `move` with a missing `from` and a `path` inside it gives `PATH_NOT_FOUND`, not `MOVE_INTO_CHILD`.\n- **`remove` with path `\"\"`:** the result is `null`.\n- **`ops` not an array:** throws a `PatchError` with code `BAD_OP` and index 0.\n- **`value: undefined`:** counts as a missing `value`, so it gives `BAD_OP`.\n\nIf the hidden tests expect something different for any of these, they're each a one-line change.",
