Summary

Exact prompt

# Task: fix the feed pagination Users report that the item feed served by `feed.py` skips items, shows duplicates, returns short pages when filtering, and sometimes offers a "next page" link that leads to an empty page. Fix `list_items` in `feed.py` (rewrite freely) so it follows `PAGINATION.md` exactly. Python standard library only (`sqlite3`). Keep the function name and signature. You may not change the table schema in `schema.sql`. No network. The grader runs a hidden unittest suite: it builds SQLite databases with `schema.sql` (hundreds of items, many sharing the same `created_at`), walks pages with various limits, filters and orders, inserts and deletes rows between page requests, and feeds invalid arguments.

The starting code paginates on created_at alone (skips ties), filters after LIMIT (short pages), emits a next cursor for an exactly-full last page, interpolates order into SQL and accepts any cursor. Hidden walks with inserts/deletes between pages expose each bug. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com. Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price API-equivalent estimate (run on a ChatGPT subscription, not billed).

Success criteria: 1. All 10 hidden unittest cases pass (schema unchanged, item shape, desc and asc walks with ties at several limits, filtered pages exactly full, exactly-full last page has no cursor, limit/order validation, injection-safe status, bad/mismatched cursors raise ValueError, inserts/deletes between pages).

Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch7 case g05-cursor-pagination-bugs (offline fixture). Prepared with batch7/prepare.sh on the shared box; only TASK.md + starting files were copied to the agent machine, hidden key/tests stayed on the box. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim on stdin. Flags: --json -s workspace-write --skip-git-repo-check --ephemeral --ignore-user-config --ignore-rules -C <workdir>. Scored on the box with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Single run, no retries. User-level AGENTS.md (846 bytes, sha256 83ec4fe50da8) may have been in context; --ignore-user-config does not document excluding it. Serving model not confirmed: requested via -m; the event log does not echo the serving model id. Price source is secondary (pricing.json verification='secondary', https://www.actuia.com/en/news/ai-api-pricing-in-october-2026-050-to-50-for-output/), not an official OpenAI price page. Score: 10/10. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (ChatGPT plan, nothing billed); input_tokens include cached reads; output_tokens include reasoning tokens. Tool calls 6 (1 failed, recovered). Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run

  1. Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
  2. Same setup: GPT-6.1 Sol (openai/gpt-6.1-sol, effort default (no reasoning-effort override) · thinking on) via Codex CLI 0.163.0 (codex exec --json), cloud.
  3. It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. All 10 hidden unittest cases pass (schema unchanged, item shape, desc and asc walks with ties at several limits, filtered pages exactly full, exactly-full last page has no cursor, limit/order validation, injection-safe status, bad/mismatched cursors raise ValueError, inserts/deletes between pages).
  4. Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

Returns `{\"items\": [...], \"next_cursor\": <str or None>}`; each item is a dict with exactly the keys `id`, `created_at`, `status`, `title` (values as stored).\n\n1. Order. `order=\"desc\"`: newest first, i.e. `created_at` descending, ties broken by `id` descending. `order=\"asc\"`: `created_at` ascending, ties by `id` ascending. Any other value raises `ValueError`.\n2. Limit. `limit` must be an `int` from 1 to 100 inclusive; anything else (0, 101, negative, a string) raises `ValueError`.\n3. Filter. `status=None` means all items; otherwise only items whose `status` equals the given string exactly. The filter is applied before paging: every page contains exactly `limit` items, except the last page, which contains the remaining ones. The status value is data, never SQL (a status such as `x' OR '1'='1` just matches nothing).\n4. Next cursor. `next_cursor` is an opaque string, or `None` exactly when no matching item comes after the last returned item at the time of the call. So a final page that is exactly full has `next_cursor=None`, and an empty result is `{\"items\": [], \"next_cursor\": None}`.\n5. Continuation. Calling again with `cursor=<next_cursor>` and the same `status` and `order` (limit may change) returns the following page. Walking all pages returns every matching item exactly once, in the order of rule 1, even when rows change between calls: items inserted with a `created_at` newer than every existing item never appear in a later page of a `desc` walk (and appear at the end of an `asc` walk); a deleted item that was not yet returned is simply absent; deleting items that were already returned never causes skips or repeats. Ties on `created_at` across page boundaries must not cause skips or repeats.\n6. Bad cursors. `cursor=None` means the first page. Any other value must be a cursor returned by a previous call; anything else (empty string, random text, corrupted data) raises `ValueError` (not any other exception type). A cursor used with a different `status` or `order` than the call that produced it raises `ValueError`.\n\"\"\"Item feed pagination.\"\"\"\nimport base64\n\n\ndef list_items(conn, limit=20, cursor=None, status=None, order=\"desc\"):\n    cmp = \"<\" if order == \"desc\" else \">\"\n    sql = \"SELECT id, created_at, status, title FROM items\"\n    args = []\n    if cursor:\n        last = base64.b64decode(cursor).decode()\n        sql += f\" WHERE created_at {cmp} ?\"\n        args.append(last)\n    sql += f\" ORDER BY created_at {order} LIMIT ?\"\n    args.append(limit)\n    rows = conn.execute(sql, args).fetchall()\n    items = [dict(zip((\"id\", \"created_at\", \"status\", \"title\"), r)) for r in rows]\n    if status is not None:\n        items = [i for i in items if i[\"status\"] == status]\n    nxt = None\n    if len(rows) == limit:\n        nxt = base64.b64encode(rows[-1][1].encode()).decode()\n    return {\"items\": items, \"next_cursor\": nxt}\nCREATE TABLE items (\n  id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY,\n  created_at TEXT NOT NULL,   -- 'YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ', many rows share a value\n  status TEXT NOT NULL,\n  title TEXT NOT NULL\n);\nCREATE INDEX items_created ON items(created_at, id);\n", "exit_code": 0, "status": "completed"}}
