Summary
Exact prompt
# Library overdue fines across branches Inputs: `loans.csv`, `renewals.csv`, `rates.json` (per item type: fine per day, cap per loan, grace days), `calendar.json` (closed dates and the as-of date). Rules: - Patron ids were typed by hand at different branches: "P-0412", "p0412", "P 412" and "P0412" are the same patron. Report ids as "P" followed by 4 digits (e.g. "P0412"). - A loan's due date is its original due date unless it was renewed. With several renewals, the one with the latest `renewed_at` timestamp sets the due date (staff corrections can move it earlier). File order means nothing. - Open days are all dates except Sundays and the dates in calendar.json `closed`. - Late open days = open days after the due date, up to and including the return date (or the as-of date if the item is not returned). - The first `grace_days` late open days are free. Fine = per_day x the remaining late open days, but never more than the item type's cap. - capped_loans = loans whose fine hit the cap, sorted by loan_id. - A patron is blocked when their total fines are 10.00 or more. Write `out/fines.json`: `{"patrons": {"<P####>": <total fines>, ...}, "blocked": [<P####>, ...], "capped_loans": [<loan_id>, ...], "total_usd": <n>}`. List only patrons with a total above 0. blocked is sorted. ## How this run works - Work on your own: nobody will answer questions in this task, and writing to `ask/` counts against the run. - Write only under `out/`. Create `out/` if it is missing. Inputs are synthetic; don't fetch anything from the network. - Scoring is partial credit: each listed check is pass/fail, and the score is the share passed. Numbers are compared to within 0.005 unless the task says otherwise.
Compute per-patron overdue fines from about 2,000 loans and their renewals. Late days count only open days (no Sundays or listed closures), with per-type grace days and caps. The latest renewal by timestamp sets the due date even when a staff correction moved it earlier, and patron ids typed in several formats must be merged before block thresholds apply. All money is whole cents. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is measured tokens x Venice list price and matches the amount Venice reported billing.
Success criteria: patron_totals patron_ids_merged blocked capped_loans total
Setup notes: Batch 17 case s03-library-overdue-fines (offline, synthetic inputs, run seed 2534 6282 36). Autonomous case: no stand-in user and the agent never needs to check with the user; any file the solver wrote to ask/ is counted as a measured intervention (0) and blocks a pass. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Hidden key kept outside the solver's work dir. Scored on the box with the case's scorer; pass = every check true and no ask/ files. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 4.30 (8 cores). Time-zone results depend on the system time-zone database: tzdata 2026e-0+deb13u1 (Python zoneinfo). Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max 16,000 output tokens per call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.05, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x Venice list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. This is a re-run of an earlier run of the same case and model that was cut off by the nightly Venice budget (its per-run cap had been shrunk to fit the leftover allowance); that run was voided and never published. It is a new run, not a rescore. It ran at the normal $0.05 per-run cap. Score: 5/5. Cost is measured per-call tokens x Venice list price and matches the amount Venice reported billing. Input tokens include cached reads.

Reproduce this run
- Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
- Same setup: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (Venice) (venice/deepseek-v4-1-flash, thinking on) via
venice-mini-agent v1.3.1, cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: patron_totals patron_ids_merged blocked capped_loans total
- Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

"reasoning_content": "Let me sanity check a few things. The capped detection: fine >= cap. But note that a loan could have fine exactly equal to cap without \"hitting\" the cap (i.e., computed fine equals cap exactly). The rule says \"loans whose fine hit the cap\". Ambiguous but likely means fine == cap after capping. Let me consider: if computed fine > cap, it's capped. If computed fine == cap exactly, it also equals cap. I'll treat fine >= cap as capped. That's what I did.\n\nLet me verify a couple of examples manually.\n\nL100118: book, due 2026-08-17, returned 2026-09-02. Open days after 8/17 up to 9/2. Let me count. Actually let me just trust the code but verify one.\n\nLet me check the patron normalization: \"P 412\" -> digits \"412\" -> zfill(4) = \"0412\" -> \"P0412\". Good. \"P-0412\" -> \"0412\". \"p0412\" -> \"0412\". Good.\n\nBut wait: \"P 309\" -> \"309\" -> \"0309\". And \"P-309\" -> \"0309\". Good.\n\nNow, potential issue: patron ids like \"P 412\" have 3 digits, zfill to 4. Good.\n\nLet me double-check the late day counting with a manual example.\n\nL100118: due 2026-08-17 (Monday). returned 2026-09-02 (Wednesday). Open days after 8/17 through 9/2 inclusive.\nDates: 8/18 Tue, 8/19 Wed, 8/20 closed, 8/21 Fri, 8/22 Sat, 8/23 Sun(closed), 8/24 Mon, 8/25 Tue, 8/26 Wed, 8/27 Thu, 8/28 Fri, 8/29 Sat, 8/30 Sun, 8/31 Mon, 9/1 Tue, 9/2 Wed.\nCount open: 8/18,8/19,8/21,8/22,8/24,8/25,8/26,8/27,8/28,8/29,8/31,9/1,9/2 = 13. grace 1 -> 12 chargeable * 0.25 = 3.00. Under cap 5. Fine 3.00.\n\nLet me verify with code output for that patron. Let me just print some.\n\nActually let me just double check the output file.\n\nOne concern: the \"capped_loans\" definition. Let me reconsider. \"capped_loans = loans whose fine hit the cap\". I interpreted as fine == cap. But there's a subtlety: a loan whose computed fine exceeds cap gets capped. A loan whose computed fine exactly equals cap also \"hit the cap\". Both included. Fine.\n\nBut there's another subtlety: what if grace_days makes chargeable 0 but cap... no.\n\nLet me also reconsider whether \"late open days\" should include the due date itself. \"open days after the due date\" - strictly after. Good.\n\nLet me verify the output looks right."

"reasoning_content": "Let me double-check the logic. A few concerns:\n\n1. The \"capped_loans\" definition: \"loans whose fine hit the cap\". My condition `fine >= cap - 1e-9 and fine > 0`. But if cap is 0? No caps are 0. Fine. But what about a loan where chargeable days * per_day exactly equals cap? That counts as hitting cap. Good.\n\n2. Patron normalization: \"P 412\" -> digits \"412\" -> zfill(4) -> \"0412\" -> \"P0412\". Good. \"P-0412\" -> \"0412\". Good.\n\n3. Renewals: latest renewed_at sets due date. Good.\n\n4. Late open days: open days after due date up to and including return/as_of. Good.\n\nLet me verify a couple manually. Take L100118: book, due 2026-08-17, returned 2026-09-02. No renewal. Count open days after Aug 17 through Sep 2. Let me just trust code.\n\nActually wait \u2014 one subtlety: \"up to and including the return date\". If returned before due, late=0. Good.\n\nLet me verify the capped count seems high (456). With book cap 5.0 = 20 chargeable days, many loans overdue long. Plausible.\n\nLet me double check the total and a sample patron. Let me verify P0031 = 30.75. That's a lot. Let me check which loans.\n\nActually let me just sanity check one loan manually.\n\nL100118: due 2026-08-17 (Monday). Returned 2026-09-02 (Wednesday). Open days after Aug 17: Aug 18(Tue),19,20(closed),21,22,23(Sun skip),24,25,26,27,28,29(Sat),30(Sun),31, Sep1,2. Let me count: Aug18,19,21,22,24,25,26,27,28,31 = 10; Sep1,2 = 2. Total 12. grace 1 -> 11 chargeable * 0.25 = 2.75. Fine 2.75.\n\nLet me check code output for that patron P8392.\n\nLet me just run a quick verification script."

"reasoning_content": "Let me verify a couple of computations manually. Take L100118: P8392, book, due 2026-08-17, returned 2026-09-02. No renewal. Late open days after 8/17 up to 9/2. Let me count. Also check the renewal logic - \"staff corrections can move it earlier\" - latest renewed_at sets due date. Good.\n\nLet me double check the \"capped\" detection: fine hit the cap. I used fine >= cap - 1e-9. But note fine is rounded to 2 decimals before comparison. For book cap 5.0, fine = 0.25*chargeable. If chargeable=20, fine=5.0 exactly. Good.\n\nBut there's a subtlety: a loan could have fine exactly equal to cap without \"hitting\" it? No, hitting cap means fine == cap. Fine.\n\nLet me verify L100118 manually.\n\ndue 2026-08-17 (Monday). Days after: 8/18 Tue, 8/19 Wed, 8/20 closed, 8/21 Fri, 8/22 Sat, 8/23 Sun skip, 8/24 Mon, 8/25 Tue, 8/26 Wed, 8/27 Thu, 8/28 Fri, 8/29 Sat, 8/30 Sun skip, 8/31 Mon, 9/1 Tue, 9/2 Wed.\n\nCount: 8/18,19,21,22,24,25,26,27,28,29,31,9/1,9/2 = 13 open days. grace 1 -> 12 chargeable *0.25 = 3.0. \n\nP8392 total 34.25 across multiple loans. Fine.\n\nLet me sanity check the total. Seems plausible.\n\nOne concern: the returned_date might be before due date (early return) -> late=0, fine 0. Good.\n\nAnother concern: renewals where new_due_date is earlier than original due (staff correction). We take latest renewed_at regardless. Good.\n\nLet me verify the output format matches. patrons dict, blocked sorted, capped_loans sorted, total_usd. Good.\n\nLet me double-check the patron normalization: \"P 412\" -> digits \"412\" -> zfill(4) \"0412\" -> P0412. Good. \"p-4685\" -> P4685. Good.\n\nI think it's correct. Let me just verify a renewal case, e.g., L100251: original due 2026-07-31, renewals: 2026-08-07 (07-28 09:27), 2026-08-14 (07-21 03:29), 2026-08-14 (08-05 11:47). Latest renewed_at is 2026-08-05 11:47 -> new_due 2026-08-14. Returned 2026-08-24. Good.\n\nThe solution looks solid. Let me finalize."

"content": "Done. I wrote `out/fines.json` with the computed overdue fines.\n\nSummary of the approach:\n- **Patron normalization**: stripped all non-digits and zero-padded to 4 digits, prefixing `P` (so `P-0412`, `p0412`, `P 412`, `P0412` \u2192 `P0412`).\n- **Due dates**: started from the loan's original `due_date`, then overrode with the `new_due_date` from the renewal having the latest `renewed_at` timestamp per loan (file order ignored).\n- **Open days**: all dates except Sundays and the `closed` dates; counted open days strictly after the due date through the return date (or `as_of` = 2026-10-20 if unreturned).\n- **Fines**: subtracted `grace_days`, multiplied by `per_day_usd`, capped at `cap_usd`; capped loans recorded when the fine reached the cap.\n- **Aggregation**: summed per patron (only >0), flagged blocked at \u2265 $10.00, sorted `blocked` and `capped_loans`, and totaled everything.\n\nResult: 377 patrons with fines, 238 blocked, 456 capped loans, total $6728.30.",
