Summary
Exact prompt
# Work backward from a retirement budget: savings target, contributions and earliest retirement age `input.json` describes a saver (synthetic numbers). Write `solve.py` (Python 3 standard library only) so that `python solve.py input.json answer.json` computes how much they need, how much they must save each year, and the earliest age they could retire. We re-run it on fresh inputs, so do not hard-code anything. ## Input `current_age`, `retire_age`, `end_age` (integers), `spend_today` (yearly spending in today's dollars), `inflation`, `return_pre` (yearly return before retirement, never 0), `return_post` (after), `current_savings`, `gross_income`, `actual_contribution` (what they save per year now), `part_time_income_today` (yearly part-time income in today's dollars), `part_time_years`. ## Rules 1. For a retirement age A, the first retirement year's spending is S = `spend_today * (1 + inflation) ** (A - current_age)`; spending in retirement year k (k = 0 .. end_age - A - 1) is S * (1 + inflation) ** k. 2. Part-time variant: income in retirement year k is `part_time_income_today * (1 + inflation) ** (A - current_age + k)` for k < `part_time_years`, else 0. The withdrawal is max(0, spending - income). 3. Withdrawals happen at the start of each retirement year. The **target** for age A is the sum over k of withdrawal_k / (1 + return_post) ** k (no part-time income), and **target_with_part_time** uses rule 2. 4. Saving: with m = A - current_age and g = (1 + return_pre) ** m, the projected savings at A with a level contribution C at the end of each year is `current_savings * g + C * (g - 1) / return_pre`. 5. `required_contribution` = the C that makes the projection equal the target for A = `retire_age`, but never below 0; the same with the part-time target gives `required_contribution_with_part_time`. `required_savings_rate` = required_contribution / gross_income (6 decimals). `projected_at_retire_age` = the projection with C = `actual_contribution`. 6. `earliest_retire_age` = the smallest integer A from current_age + 1 to end_age - 1 where the projection with `actual_contribution` >= the target for that A; `null` if none. `earliest_retire_age_with_part_time` does the same against the part-time target. 7. Round money to 2 decimals only when writing. ## Output `answer.json` keys: `target`, `target_with_part_time`, `required_contribution`, `required_contribution_with_part_time`, `required_savings_rate`, `projected_at_retire_age`, `earliest_retire_age`, `earliest_retire_age_with_part_time`. ## Scoring Hidden checks (partial credit = fraction passed; all must pass), money within 0.011, rate within 0.000001, ages exact: `savings_target`, `part_time_target`, `required_contributions`, `earliest_ages` on the given input; `fresh_run_1` and `fresh_run_2_edge_cases` (all keys; the second input has part-time income above spending and a small contribution) on fresh inputs. Each run has a 60-second limit.
Start-of-year withdrawals discounted at the post-retirement return, part-time income inflated from today and floored at zero withdrawals, end-of-year contribution annuity, and a per-age search where the target moves with the age. Inspired by https://x.com/allen_lattimer/status/2105321749323841757 Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price estimate (measured tokens x pricing.json list price).
These are synthetic test cases for comparing AI models, not financial advice.
Success criteria: 1. savings_target 2. part_time_target 3. required_contributions 4. earliest_ages 5. fresh_run_1 6. fresh_run_2_edge_cases
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 9 case j04-reverse-retirement-plan (offline fixture). Prepared with batch9/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 (/workspace/usecase-runner/venice_agent2.py) via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max_tokens 16000/call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.0362, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x venice_prices.json list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via Venice OpenAI-compatible API (16000 max tokens/call, $0.0362 run cap). Score: 6/6. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured per-call tokens x pricing.json list price (paid from Venice DIEM allowance; Venice billing not itemized). input_tokens include cached reads. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run
- Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
- Same setup: GLM 4.7 (Venice) (venice/zai-org-glm-4.7, thinking on) via
venice-mini-agent v1.3.1, cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. savings_target 2. part_time_target 3. required_contributions 4. earliest_ages 5. fresh_run_1 6. fresh_run_2_edge_cases
- Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.
The solution is complete. Here's a summary:

**Created `solve.py`** that:
- Reads the input JSON with retirement parameters
- Calculates the savings target needed for retirement using the specified formulas
- Computes required annual contributions (with and without part-time income)
- Determines the earliest retirement age achievable with current savings rate
- Outputs all results to `answer.json`

**Key calculations implemented:**
1. **Target**: Present value of all retirement spending, discounted at post-retirement return rate
2. **Target with part-time**: Same but reduced by part-time income for the first 8 years
3. **Required contribution**: Annual savings needed to reach target by `retire_age`
4. **Earliest retirement age**: Smallest age where projected savings ≥ target

**Test run results:**
- Target: $5,225,054.28
- Target with part-time: $4,723,009.09
- Required contribution: $121,801.85/year
- Required contribution with part-time: $109,953.72/year
- Required savings rate: 95.16%
- Projected at retire_age (56): $2,606,301.40
- Earliest retire age: 67
- Earliest retire age with part-time: 65

The solution uses only Python 3 standard library, handles all edge cases (including when part-time income exceeds spending), and rounds monetary values to 2 decimals only when writing output.
The solution runs successfully and produces output. Let me verify the calculations manually to make sure they're correct:

Input:
- current_age = 33
- retire_age = 56
- end_age = 95
- spend_today = 105000
- inflation = 0.0248
- return_pre = 0.0518
- return_post = 0.0433
- current_savings = 20000
- gross_income = 128000
- actual_contribution = 60000
- part_time_income_today = 38000
- part_time_years = 8

Let me verify the target calculation:
- m = end_age - retire_age = 95 - 56 = 39 retirement years
- First retirement year spending: S = 105000 * (1.0248)^(56-33) = 105000 * (1.0248)^23

(1.0248)^23 ≈ 1.743
S ≈ 105000 * 1.743 ≈ 183015

Target = sum over k=0 to 38 of S * (1.0248)^k / (1.0433)^k
= S * sum over k=0 to 38 of (1.0248/1.0433)^k
= S * sum over k=0 to 38 of (0.9823)^k

This is a geometric series with ratio r = 0.9823
Sum = (1 - r^39) / (1 - r) = (1 - 0.9823^39) / (1 - 0.9823)

0.9823^39 ≈ 0.504
Sum ≈ (1 - 0.504) / 0.0177 ≈ 0.496 / 0.0177 ≈ 28.0

Target ≈ 183015 * 28.0 ≈ 5,124,420

I'll refine the calculation using precise computational methods to ensure accuracy. The initial approximation provides a rough estimate, but exact computation requires more precise mathematical techniques.

The geometric series summation involves carefully tracking the ratio and number of terms. By calculating the exact sum using the formula (1 - r^n) / (1 - r), I can determine the precise target value. The key is understanding how the ratio and number of terms interact to produce the final result.

The calculation reveals a nuanced approach to determining the target, with each step building on the previous computation to arrive at a more accurate representation. I'll continue the calculation, focusing on the key steps and rounding to two decimal places:

The geometric series sum is approximately 28.527, with a target of 5,225,054.28. When considering part-time income, the target adjusts to 4,723,009.09. The required contribution for retirement is 121,801.85, with a part-time variant of 109,953.72. The projected savings rate is 0.951577, and the projected amount at retirement age is 2,606,301.40.

The earliest retirement age is 67, with a part-time option at 65. These calculations provide a comprehensive view of financial planning parameters.",
