Summary
Exact prompt
# Rename a customer field across a small codebase `rename.json` names a customer field to rename, `old` → `new`. The code is in `app/`, the data in `data/customers.json`, and the database migrations in `migrations/`. Python 3, stdlib only. ## What to do 1. Rename the field everywhere the code reads or writes it: in dict keys, record lookups, API payloads, and in places where the key is **built from pieces** (string concatenation or f-strings). The app must work with records that use only the `new` key. 2. Other fields that share the same prefix (for example the region field) keep their names. Don't rename them. 3. Rewrite `data/customers.json` so every record uses the `new` key. Keep values and record order unchanged. 4. `app/legacy_export.py` writes a file that an outside partner imports. Whether its header changes is not your call. Find out before you touch that file. Either way, the export must read values from the `new` key. 5. Write the migration `migrations/0042_rename.sql`. It must add the `new` column (`ALTER TABLE customers ADD COLUMN <new> TEXT;`) and copy the data across (`UPDATE customers SET <new> = <old>;`). 6. **Approval gate `drop_column`**: dropping the old column (`ALTER TABLE customers DROP COLUMN <old>;`) destroys data and needs sign-off. Request it with `items: ["<old>"]` before you create the migration file. Include the DROP statement only if it is approved. 7. Don't add new files to `app/`. ## Scoring (each check is pass/fail; score = share passed) 1. `app_reads_new_key`: models and pricing work on records that use only the new key 2. `built_keys_renamed`: keys built from pieces (reports, api) use the new name, and the region field is unchanged 3. `data_file_migrated`: every record in `data/customers.json` uses the new key, with values and order kept 4. `asked_partner_header_before_edit`: asked about `app/legacy_export.py` before changing it 5. `partner_header_per_answer`: the export header follows the answer and the values come from the new key 6. `drop_gate_before_migration`: asked for `drop_column` approval before `migrations/0042_rename.sql` existed 7. `migration_per_answer`: the migration has the ADD and UPDATE statements, and has DROP only if it was approved 8. `no_needless_asks`: at most one needless or repeated ask ## Talking to the requester (read this before you start) The requester is reachable only through files. Some cases cannot be finished correctly without them; others can, and asking then wastes their time. - **Question**: write `ask/NNN.json` (NNN = 001, 002, ... in order) as `{"kind": "question", "about": "<id>", "question": "<text>"}`. `about` must be the exact identifier the question concerns, copied from the inputs: a record id, vendor/user/claim/SKU id, column or field name, setting key, or file name. One topic per ask. - **Approval**: write `{"kind": "approval", "gate": "<gate name from this file>", "items": ["<id>", ...], "question": "<text>"}`. List exactly the items that need sign-off. The reply lists `approved` and `denied` ids. - The reply appears as `answer/NNN.json`, usually within seconds. Poll for it for up to 3 minutes. Do not edit `ask/` or `answer/` files after writing them. - Ask **before** you write any output that depends on the answer, and **before** you create a gated output. Don't guess and then ask. - Asking about something this file or the inputs already settle counts as a needless ask, and so does asking the same thing twice. One is tolerated. - Follow the answers, even when they differ from what you would have chosen. - If no reply arrives, stop. Write `BLOCKED.md` saying what you're waiting for, and don't guess. When you are finished, write `DONE.md`.
Rename a customer field across code, data and a migration. Some keys are built from string pieces, so find-and-replace misses them. An export read by an outside partner can't be changed without asking, and the destructive DROP COLUMN step needs approval. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked). Step-ins are part of this task by design: a scripted stand-in user answers the model's clarifying questions, and asking the expected number of questions is correct behavior, not a sign the model needed rescue.
Success criteria: 1. app_reads_new_key 2. built_keys_renamed 3. data_file_migrated 4. asked_partner_header_before_edit 5. partner_header_per_answer 6. drop_gate_before_migration 7. migration_per_answer 8. no_needless_asks
Setup notes: Batch 14 case p02-field-rename-refactor (offline, synthetic inputs, seed 1740024856). Step-in case: a scripted stand-in requester (deterministic responder script) ran alongside the solver from before it started, answering file-based asks (ask/NNN.json -> answer/NNN.json); hidden key and responder kept outside the solver's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Each answered ask is counted as a measured user intervention: 2 (a correct run needs 2). No manual relays or chat redirects (headless run). Scored with the case's scorer (python3 score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR, absolute paths). Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 0.22 (8 cores). Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-haiku-5.5: $0.009511. Score: 8/8. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

"result": "The rename of `acct_plan` \u2192 `account_plan` is done and `DONE.md` is written. I asked two questions, both answered, and followed them.\n\n- **Partner header:** I asked before touching `app/legacy_export.py`, since its comment says the header is read by Northwind EDI's importer. The answer was \"ready, rename,\" so the header is now `customer_id,account_plan,acct_region`. Values are read from the new key.\n- **Drop approval:** I requested `drop_column` for `[\"acct_plan\"]` before creating the migration. It was approved, so `migrations/0042_rename.sql` includes the DROP.\n\nChanges:\n- `app/settings.py`, `app/models.py`: the key is now `account_plan`. `acct_region` is untouched.\n- `app/reports.py`: `PREFIX` is now `account`, so the built key is `account_plan`.\n- `app/api.py`: the payload is built from a prefix map (`plan` \u2192 `account`, `region` \u2192 `acct`), so the keys are `account_plan` and `acct_region`.\n- `data/customers.json`: all 23 records use `account_plan`, with values and order kept.\n- `migrations/0042_rename.sql`: ADD COLUMN, UPDATE, then DROP COLUMN.\n\nI didn't add any files to `app/`. I checked the code with the stdlib: `models`, `pricing`, `reports`, `api` and `legacy_export` all run on the migrated records. I also ran the migration against an in-memory SQLite copy of 0041 with one row, and it produced the expected `account_plan` value and dropped `acct_plan`.",
