Summary
Exact prompt
# Task: refactor the report renderers and add Markdown `reports.py` has three copy-pasted renderers. Refactor so the row processing (name default, qty/price parsing, skipping negative qty, line totals, running total/count) lives in **one** place that all renderers use, then add a fourth renderer. Requirements: 1. `render_text`, `render_csv`, `render_html` keep their signatures and produce **byte-identical** output to today for every input (the grader compares against the original on hundreds of random inputs, including odd names and float prices). 2. No function in `reports.py` may be longer than 15 lines (def line to last line, inclusive), and the expression `round(qty * price, 2)` (or any `qty * price` multiplication) must appear exactly once in the file. 3. Add `render_markdown(title, rows, currency="EUR")` producing: ``` ## <title> | Name | Qty | Total | |---|---:|---:| | <name> | <qty> | <line_total with 2 decimals> <currency> | ... | **TOTAL** | <count> | **<total with 2 decimals> <currency>** | ``` followed by a final newline. In names, `|` is escaped as `\|`. Same row rules as the others (default name `(unnamed)`, negative qty rows skipped). Empty `rows` still prints the header and TOTAL lines. Standard library only. No network.
Refactor must preserve subtle behaviour (rounding of each line before summing, truncation with '~', CSV quoting, HTML escaping, string qty/price coercion) while meeting structural limits checked via AST. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).
Success criteria: 1. legacy_identical: render_text/csv/html output is byte-identical to the original on 500 random inputs each. 2. functions_short: no function in reports.py is longer than 15 lines. 3. single_multiplication: `qty * price` appears exactly once in reports.py. 4. markdown_correct: render_markdown matches the specified format on 3 hidden inputs (pipe escaping, default name, skipped negative qty, empty rows, rounding).
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 5 case e08-refactor-report-formatters (offline fixture). Prepared with batch5/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-opus-5.5: $0.181029. Score: 4/4 checks. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

- Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
- Same setup: Claude Opus 5.5 (anthropic/claude-opus-5.5, effort default (no --effort flag) · thinking on) via
Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. legacy_identical: render_text/csv/html output is byte-identical to the original on 500 random inputs each. 2. functions_short: no function in reports.py is longer than 15 lines. 3. single_multiplication: `qty * price` appears exactly once in reports.py. 4. markdown_correct: render_markdown matches the specified format on 3 hidden inputs (pipe escaping, default name, skipped negative qty, empty rows, rounding).
- Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

"result": "I've refactored `reports.py` and added the Markdown renderer. I ran the three old renderers against the new ones on 20,000 random inputs and every output matched byte for byte.\n\n**What changed**\n- **One place for row processing:** a new helper, `_process_rows(rows)`, handles the name default, the qty and price parsing, skipping negative qty, line totals, and the running total and count. It returns the processed rows plus the total and count, and all four renderers call it. `qty * price` now appears exactly once in the file.\n- **Small helpers:** `_money`, `_text_name` (shortens names over 20 characters), `_csv_name` (quotes names for CSV), `_html_esc` and `_html_row`. They hold the formatting that each output style does differently.\n- **Function length:** the longest function is `_process_rows` at 14 lines; every other function is 10 lines or fewer.\n- **`render_markdown`:** matches the format in the task. `|` in names becomes `\\|`, and empty `rows` still prints the header and the TOTAL line (`| **TOTAL** | 0 | **0.00 EUR** |`). As in CSV and HTML, long names are not shortened.\n\n**How I checked it**\n- The random inputs included missing or empty names; names with commas, quotes, `<&>`, `|`, accented characters and newlines; names of 20 and 21 characters; qty given as strings, floats or booleans; and float prices.\n- They also included bad values (`\"x\"`, `\"bad\"`, `\"nan\"`). On those, the new code fails with the same error and message as the old code, because parsing still happens in the same order.\n- The row helper never makes a renderer read `rows` more than once, so passing a generator still works.\n\nThe test script is in `/tmp/rt` and isn't part of the project.",
