Summary
Exact prompt
# Task: fix the spreadsheet formula engine `sheet.py` exposes `evaluate(grid)`: it takes a sheet as a list of rows of cell strings (as read from a CSV file) and returns the computed values in the same shape. The current version gets precedence wrong, crashes on reference cycles and long dependency chains, and does not produce the error values users expect. Make it implement `SHEET_RULES.md` exactly (rewrite freely). Keep the function name and signature. Python standard library only. Do not use `eval`/`exec` on cell text. No network. `python3 sheet.py in.csv out.csv` should keep working as a command line wrapper (read CSV, evaluate, write CSV). The grader runs a hidden unittest suite that calls `evaluate` on many small grids and a few large ones and compares every output cell string exactly.
The starting engine rewrites cells into Python eval (wrong precedence for unary minus, no error values, RecursionError on cycles and long chains). Correctness needs a real parser, error propagation order, aggregate ignore-rules, a static cycle graph and iterative evaluation. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com. Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price API-equivalent estimate (run on a ChatGPT subscription, not billed).
Success criteria: 1. All 12 hidden unittest cases pass (cell kinds and output shape, references incl. AA/$, precedence and comparisons, values in arithmetic, aggregates, IF/ABS, error values and propagation order, cycles, number formatting, 5,000-cell chains both directions, 10,000-cell grid under 5 s, CLI wrapper).
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch7 case g12-spreadsheet-formula-engine (offline fixture). Prepared with batch7/prepare.sh on the shared box; only TASK.md + starting files were copied to the agent machine, hidden key/tests stayed on the box. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim on stdin. Flags: --json -s workspace-write --skip-git-repo-check --ephemeral --ignore-user-config --ignore-rules -C <workdir>. Scored on the box with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Single run, no retries. User-level AGENTS.md (846 bytes, sha256 83ec4fe50da8) may have been in context; --ignore-user-config does not document excluding it. Serving model not confirmed: requested via -m; the event log does not echo the serving model id. Price source is secondary (pricing.json verification='secondary', https://www.actuia.com/en/news/ai-api-pricing-in-october-2026-050-to-50-for-output/), not an official OpenAI price page. Score: 12/12. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (ChatGPT plan, nothing billed); input_tokens include cached reads; output_tokens include reasoning tokens. Tool calls 5 (1 failed, recovered). Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

The result has exactly the same shape as the input and contains only strings.\n\n1. Cell kinds. `\"\"` is empty. Text starting with `=` is a formula. Otherwise, if the text (with surrounding spaces stripped) matches `^[+-]?(\\d+(\\.\\d*)?|\\.\\d+)([eE][+-]?\\d+)?$` it is a number; anything else is text and is output unchanged. Empty cells stay `\"\"` in the output.\n2. References. Column letters (`A`..`Z`, `AA`, `AB`, ... case-insensitive) followed by a row number starting at 1: `A1` is `grid[0][0]`, `B3` is `grid[2][1]`. A `$` before the letters and/or the digits is allowed and ignored (`$A$1`). A reference outside the grid (or to a missing cell of a short row) is an empty cell.\n3. Ranges `A1:B3` (any two corners, so `B3:A1` is the same rectangle) are only allowed as arguments of `SUM`, `MIN`, `MAX`, `AVERAGE` and `COUNT`. A range anywhere else (on its own, in an operator, or as an argument of `IF` or `ABS`) is a syntax error.\n4. Expressions: numbers (`2`, `1.5`, `.5`, `1e3`), references, parentheses, function calls and operators. Precedence from lowest to highest:\n comparison `=`, `<>`, `<`, `>`, `<=`, `>=` (non-associative; result 1 for true, 0 for false) < `+`, `-` (left-assoc) < `*`, `/` (left-assoc) < `^` (right-assoc, so `2^3^2` = 512) < unary `-`/`+` (so `-2^2` = 4 and `2^-1` = 0.5). Spaces between tokens are allowed.\n5. Values in arithmetic and comparisons: an empty cell counts as 0; a text value gives `#VALUE!`. A formula that is only a reference (`=A1`) returns the referenced value as is (text stays text, an empty cell gives 0).\n6. Functions (names case-insensitive): `SUM`, `MIN`, `MAX`, `AVERAGE`, `COUNT` take any number of arguments, each a range or an expression. Inside ranges, and for arguments that are a single reference, empty and text cells are ignored. `COUNT` counts the numeric values. `MIN`/`MAX` of no numbers give 0; `AVERAGE` of no numbers gives `#DIV/0!`. Any other argument (an expression that is not a single reference) is used as a number following rule 5. `ABS(x)`: x is used as a number (rule 5). `IF(cond, a, b)`: cond is used as a number (rule 5); if it is non-zero the result is the value of `a`, otherwise of `b`, unchanged (so `IF(1, B1, 0)` with text in B1 gives that text, and an empty B1 gives 0); the branch not taken is not used, so an error in it does not matter. A wrong number of arguments for `IF` (3) or `ABS` (1) is a syntax error. Zero arguments are allowed for the five aggregate functions.\n7. Errors are values: `#DIV/0!` (division by zero, including `0^-1`), `#VALUE!` (rule 5), `#NAME?` (unknown function), `#ERROR!` (any syntax error, e.g. `=1+`, `=(1`, `=A0`, `=1 2`), `#CYCLE!` (rule 8). An error propagates: any operator or function that uses an error value returns it (if several are used, the first one in left-to-right order; for ranges, row by row from the top-left). A formula that refers to a cell holding an error yields that error.\n8. Cycles. Build the reference graph from every cell reference that appears in each formula (ranges include all their cells; both IF branches count). Every formula cell that is on a cycle in this graph (including a cell referring to itself) evaluates to `#CYCLE!`. Other cells evaluate normally; if they use a `#CYCLE!` value it propagates like any error.\n9. Output format. Numbers: if the value is a whole number with absolute value below 1e15, print it as an integer (`3`, `-12`, and `0` for negative zero); otherwise `format(value, \".10g\")` (e.g. `0.3333333333`, `2.5`, `1e+20`). Text and error values are printed as they are.\n10. Size. Grids up to 10,000 cells, including dependency chains 5,000 cells long (e.g. `A2` = `=A1+1`, `A3` = `=A2+1`, ...), must evaluate in under 5 seconds without crashing (no `RecursionError`).\n\"\"\"Spreadsheet formula engine. usage: python3 sheet.py in.csv out.csv\"\"\"\nimport csv, re, sys\n\nREF = re.compile(r\"\\$?([A-Za-z]+)\\$?(\\d+)\")\n\n\ndef col_index(letters):\n n = 0\n for ch in letters.upper():\n n = n * 26 + ord(ch) - 64\n return n - 1\n\n\ndef evaluate(grid):\n cache = {}\n\n def cell(r, c):\n if r >= len(grid) or c >= len(grid[r]):\n return 0\n key = (r, c)\n if key in cache:\n return cache[key]\n text = grid[r][c]\n if text.startswith(\"=\"):\n expr = REF.sub(lambda m: repr(cell(int(m[2]) - 1, col_index(m[1]))), text[1:])\n expr = expr.replace(\"^\", \"**\")\n try:\n v = eval(expr, {\"SUM\": lambda *a: sum(a), \"MIN\": min, \"MAX\": max, \"ABS\": abs})\n except ZeroDivisionError:\n v = \"#DIV/0!\"\n elif text == \"\":\n v = 0\n else:\n try:\n v = float(text)\n except ValueError:\n v = text\n cache[key] = v\n return v\n\n out = []\n for r, row in enumerate(grid):\n out.append([(\"\" if t == \"\" else str(cell(r, c))) for c, t in enumerate(row)])\n return out\n\n\nif __name__ == \"__main__\":\n rows = list(csv.reader(open(sys.argv[1], newline=\"\")))\n with open(sys.argv[2], \"w\", newline=\"\") as fh:\n csv.writer(fh).writerows(evaluate(rows))\n", "exit_code": 0, "status": "completed"}}
