Summary
Exact prompt
# Task: implement a config parser from a spec Implement `parse` and `getbool` in `rconf.py` exactly as described in `SPEC.md` (read every numbered rule; edge cases are graded). Python standard library only, no third-party packages. Keep the `RConfError(msg, line)` signature and set `.line` correctly. Write your own tests if you want. No network.
Every spec rule has an edge case in the hidden tests: first-separator rule, inline comments needing whitespace, escape errors, continuation legality, cross-section recursive interpolation with $$ and cycle detection, and exact error line numbers. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).
Success criteria: 1. All 14 hidden unittest cases pass against rconf.py (60 s timeout), covering every numbered rule in SPEC.md including RConfError.line values.
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 5 case e02-conf-parser-spec (offline fixture). Prepared with batch5/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-opus-5.5: $0.284039. Score: 14/14. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run
- Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
- Same setup: Claude Opus 5.5 (anthropic/claude-opus-5.5, effort default (no --effort flag) · thinking on) via
Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. All 14 hidden unittest cases pass against rconf.py (60 s timeout), covering every numbered rule in SPEC.md including RConfError.line values.
- Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

"result": "I've implemented `parse` and `getbool` in `rconf.py` using only the standard library, and kept the `RConfError(msg, line)` signature. My own edge-case tests all pass (they're in `/tmp/rt`, outside your folder). pytest isn't installed here, so I ran them with a small standard-library stand-in. I haven't tested against the real grading suite.\n\n**Error line numbers:**\n- Parse errors report the line they happen on.\n- An unknown reference reports the line where that key was defined. For a value continued over several lines, that's the line with the key on it.\n- A reference cycle reports the line of a value in the cycle.\n\n**Where the spec was unclear, I chose:**\n- **Indented lines:** a line starting with whitespace is always treated as a continuation. So an indented line at the very top of the file, or after a blank line, comment or section header, is an error rather than being read as a normal key line. An indented `# ...` is still just a comment.\n- **Continuing a quoted value:** this is an error, since rule 7 only allows continuing unquoted values.\n- **Comments on continuation lines:** inline comments are removed there too.\n- **Continuing an empty value:** `a =` followed by ` x` gives `\"x\"`, without a leading space.\n- **References:** `${a.b.c}` splits at the first dot (section `a`, key `b.c`). References are case-insensitive. An unclosed `${` is an error. A `$` not followed by `$` or `{` is kept as a plain `$`.\n- **Section headers:** `[sec] # comment` is allowed, but other text after `]` is an error.\n- **Sections in the result:** an empty `[section]` still appears in the result as `{}`. The `\"\"` section only appears if some key comes before the first header.\n- **Text after a closing quote:** `\"x\"#y` is an error, because an inline comment needs whitespace before the `#` or `;`.\n- **`getbool`:**\n - It raises `RConfError` with `line=None` for a value that isn't a boolean and for a missing key, because the plain dict it receives no longer has line numbers.\n - Section and key lookups ignore case.\n- **Input handling:** a leading UTF-8 byte-order mark is stripped, and `bytes` input is decoded as UTF-8.",
