Summary

Exact prompt

# Task: refactor the report renderers and add Markdown `reports.py` has three copy-pasted renderers. Refactor so the row processing (name default, qty/price parsing, skipping negative qty, line totals, running total/count) lives in **one** place that all renderers use, then add a fourth renderer. Requirements: 1. `render_text`, `render_csv`, `render_html` keep their signatures and produce **byte-identical** output to today for every input (the grader compares against the original on hundreds of random inputs, including odd names and float prices). 2. No function in `reports.py` may be longer than 15 lines (def line to last line, inclusive), and the expression `round(qty * price, 2)` (or any `qty * price` multiplication) must appear exactly once in the file. 3. Add `render_markdown(title, rows, currency="EUR")` producing: ``` ## <title> | Name | Qty | Total | |---|---:|---:| | <name> | <qty> | <line_total with 2 decimals> <currency> | ... | **TOTAL** | <count> | **<total with 2 decimals> <currency>** | ``` followed by a final newline. In names, `|` is escaped as `\|`. Same row rules as the others (default name `(unnamed)`, negative qty rows skipped). Empty `rows` still prints the header and TOTAL lines. Standard library only. No network.

Refactor must preserve subtle behaviour (rounding of each line before summing, truncation with '~', CSV quoting, HTML escaping, string qty/price coercion) while meeting structural limits checked via AST. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).

Success criteria: 1. legacy_identical: render_text/csv/html output is byte-identical to the original on 500 random inputs each. 2. functions_short: no function in reports.py is longer than 15 lines. 3. single_multiplication: `qty * price` appears exactly once in reports.py. 4. markdown_correct: render_markdown matches the specified format on 3 hidden inputs (pipe escaping, default name, skipped negative qty, empty rows, rounding).

Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 5 case e08-refactor-report-formatters (offline fixture). Prepared with batch5/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-sonnet-5.5: $0.064124. Score: 4/4 checks. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run

  1. Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
  2. Same setup: Claude Sonnet 5.5 (anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5, effort default (no --effort flag) · thinking on) via Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud.
  3. It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. legacy_identical: render_text/csv/html output is byte-identical to the original on 500 random inputs each. 2. functions_short: no function in reports.py is longer than 15 lines. 3. single_multiplication: `qty * price` appears exactly once in reports.py. 4. markdown_correct: render_markdown matches the specified format on 3 hidden inputs (pipe escaping, default name, skipped negative qty, empty rows, rounding).
  4. Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

"result": "I refactored `reports.py` and added `render_markdown`. I did not compare the old and new renderers on random inputs. I overwrote the original file without keeping a copy, so there was nothing to diff against. I reviewed the logic by hand instead, and the only run was a quick check of `render_markdown` and an empty `render_html`.\n\n- **Shared row processing:** `process_rows(rows)` now holds the name default, qty/price parsing, negative-qty skipping, line totals and the running total and count. It returns `(items, total, count)`. All four renderers call it.\n- **Single multiplication:** `round(qty * price, 2)` appears once in the file, and I confirmed that with grep.\n- **Function length:** every function is at most 15 lines. The longest, `render_text`, is 13.\n- **Existing renderers:** `render_text`, `render_csv` and `render_html` keep their signatures. Their formatting is unchanged: text truncation to 20 characters, CSV quoting, and HTML escaping. `(no items)` still comes after the TOTAL line in the text output. I moved the formatting into small helpers.\n- **`render_markdown`:** the output follows your template, including the `\\|` escape in names and the final newline. With empty rows it still prints the header and TOTAL lines. In the quick run, a `|` in a name was escaped, the negative-qty row was skipped, and an empty `render_html` still produced its header and TOTAL rows.\n\nIf you have a copy of the original, a side-by-side run on random inputs would settle the byte-identical requirement.",
