Summary
Exact prompt
This repository (toolbelt, CommonJS, Node 20) has a Jest test suite: 60 tests in 9 files under test/, plus jest.config.js and test/setup.js. Migrate the whole suite from Jest to Vitest. Vitest 3 is already installed in node_modules (there is no network access, so do not install packages). When fully done: `npx vitest run` passes all 60 tests with none skipped or removed, there are no remaining uses of the jest global or Jest APIs, Jest is removed from package.json and its config is deleted, and `npm test` runs Vitest. Keep the library code in src/ unchanged. We will do this in three working sessions with breaks in between. In THIS session, set up Vitest (config incl. the @/ path alias, the setup file with the custom matcher, package.json scripts) and migrate only the tests in test/text/. Make sure those pass under Vitest, then stop and summarize what is left. ---- NEXT SEGMENT (after idle gap, --resume) ---- I'm back from my break. Continue the migration: in this session migrate the tests in test/time/ to Vitest and make sure they pass. Then stop and summarize what is left. ---- NEXT SEGMENT (after idle gap, --resume) ---- Back again. Finish the migration: migrate test/services/, remove Jest completely (dependency, config, any leftover jest APIs), make `npm test` run Vitest, and confirm `npx vitest run` passes all 60 tests with none skipped.
Migrate a Jest test suite (~300 tests) to Vitest autonomously. Inject 10-minute pauses every 30 minutes to simulate a human stepping away. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).
Success criteria: 100% tests pass under Vitest; no skipped tests added; record cache-read/write tokens.
Setup notes: Synthetic CommonJS library 'toolbelt' with 60 Jest 29 tests (fake timers, jest.mock factories, spyOn, requireActual, snapshots incl. inline, test.each tables, done callbacks, custom matcher, moduleNameMapper). Vitest 3 preinstalled, no network. Run as 3 segments of one Claude Code session joined by --resume, with 70-minute idle gaps (longer than the 1h prompt-cache TTL Claude Code uses) to emulate a human stepping away. Scale-down of the scouted 300-test case. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Idle gaps between turns were simulated (not real wall-clock waits). Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-haiku-5.5: $0.087549. Score: 7/7. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

"result": "Vitest is set up and the 25 tests in `test/text/` pass under `npm test`. The other six test files are untouched and currently don't run anywhere.\n\n**Done**\n- **`vitest.config.mjs`** (new): `@/` alias to `src/`, node environment, `test/setup.js` as the setup file, `clearMocks: true` as before. I used `.mjs` because the package is CommonJS and the config uses ESM imports.\n- **`test/setup.js`**: now imports `expect` from `vitest`. The `toBeSlug` matcher is unchanged.\n- **`test/text/*.test.js`**: `require` changed to `import`, with `describe`/`it`/`test`/`expect` imported from `vitest`. Vite's alias doesn't rewrite `require` calls, so the `@/text` import had to become an `import`.\n- **`test/text/__snapshots__/template.test.js.snap`**: Vitest names nested snapshots with ` > ` (`template > fills placeholders 1`). I regenerated the file with `-u`, which removed the two old Jest-named entries. The stored values are identical.\n- **`package.json`**: `test` is `vitest run`, plus `test:watch` is `vitest`. Vitest moved from `dependencies` to `devDependencies`. Jest is still listed for now.\n- **`package-lock.json`**: resynced with the `package.json` change. The diff is mostly dev/prod flags, and `npm ci --dry-run` passes.\n\n**Incident to know about:** my lockfile resync (`npm install --package-lock-only --offline`) emptied `node_modules`. I restored it with `npm ci --offline --ignore-scripts` from the lockfile and the npm cache, which installed 317 packages. `--ignore-scripts` skipped install scripts, so if something in the tree needs a postinstall step, that's the first place to look. The test run is green after the restore.\n\n**Temporary state**\n- `vitest.config.mjs` has `include: ['test/text/**/*.test.js']`, with a comment to widen it later. `npm test` only runs the text suite right now.\n- `jest.config.js` and the Jest devDependency are still present but nothing invokes Jest anymore.\n\n**Left for the next sessions**\n- Migrate the six files under `test/time/` and `test/services/` (debounce, duration, retry, http, logger, users). That's 35 tests, derived as 60 minus the 25 already passing.\n- Widen `include` back to all test files and remove the narrowing comment.\n- Delete `jest.config.js`, remove `jest` from `devDependencies`, and resync the lockfile with the same offline `npm install --package-lock-only --offline`, using a copy of `node_modules` as a fallback, since that command emptied it once.\n- Verify `npx vitest run` gives 60 passing, none skipped, and grep for leftover Jest globals or APIs across `test/`.\n- Make sure `src/` is unchanged.",

"result": "The `test/time/` suite is migrated and passing. Vitest now runs 47 tests across 6 files, all green, and no Jest references remain in `test/text/`, `test/time/`, or `test/setup.js`.\n\n**What changed this session**\n- **`test/time/debounce.test.js`, `duration.test.js`, `retry.test.js`**: `require` changed to `import`. Every `jest.*` call became the `vi.*` equivalent, and the Vitest globals are imported explicitly. Test bodies are otherwise unchanged.\n- **One test rewritten:** `retry.test.js` had `sleep resolves after the delay (done callback)`. Vitest 3 rejects the `done` callback style, so I converted it to an async test that asserts the promise resolves after advancing fake timers by 500 ms. The test is renamed to `sleep resolves after the delay`. Its assertion is equivalent, but it's a deliberate edit, not a straight translation.\n- **`vitest.config.mjs`**: `include` widened to `test/{text,time}/**/*.test.js`. It still has the temporary-narrowing comment, which needs updating in the final session.\n\n**Left for the next session**\n- Migrate the three files in `test/services/` (`http`, `logger`, `users`). That's the remaining 13 tests, derived as 60 minus 47.\n- Widen `include` to `test/**/*.test.js` and drop the temporary comment.\n- Delete `jest.config.js`, remove `jest` from `devDependencies` in `package.json`, and resync the lockfile. Use `npm install --package-lock-only --offline`, but know that it emptied `node_modules` last time. If it happens again, `npm ci --offline --ignore-scripts` restores it from the npm cache.\n- Final checks: `npx vitest run` should report 60 passing with none skipped. Grep all of `test/` for `jest`, `require(`, and `done` callbacks. Confirm `src/` is unchanged with `git diff --stat src/`.",

Jest is gone from `package.json`, the lockfile, and the repo, and `src/` has no diff.\n\n**What changed this session**\n- **`test/services/http.test.js` and `logger.test.js`**: `require` became `import`, and `jest.*` became `vi.*`. `jest.requireActual` in the logger test is now a plain import, since nothing is mocked there.\n- **`test/services/users.test.js`**: this one needed a different approach. `vi.mock` doesn't intercept `users.js`, because it loads `./http` and `./logger` with a native CommonJS `require`, which bypasses Vitest's module graph. Without a fix, the tests made real network calls and failed. The test now loads the same CommonJS instances via `createRequire` and uses `vi.spyOn` on their methods, which `users.js` calls through property access. `src/` stays unchanged. Spies are restored after each test.\n- **Jest removal**: deleted `jest.config.js` and uninstalled `jest`, which updated `package.json` and the lockfile. The grep for `jest` across the repo, excluding `node_modules`, `.git`, and the lockfile, now returns nothing.\n- **`vitest.config.mjs`**: `include` is back to all test files, and the stale \"narrowed\" comment is gone.\n- **`npm test`** is `vitest run`, and `test:watch` is `vitest`.\n\n**Things to know**\n- I broke `node_modules` twice this session, once with `npm install --package-lock-only` in the previous session and once with `npm ci --dry-run` here. `npm ci` clears `node_modules` before doing anything, even in dry-run mode. Both times I restored it with `npm ci --offline --ignore-scripts` from the cache, and the final tests run against that restored install. Don't use `npm ci` as a check. Also, `--ignore-scripts` skipped install scripts both times, so if a native dependency needs a postinstall step, that's a possible gap.\n- The lockfile is in sync: `npm ci` installed from it with no mismatch error.\n\n**Remaining**\nNothing in the migration. Two optional follow-ups:\n- Commit the change. You haven't asked for a commit, so I left the working tree dirty.\n- Replace the native-`require` workaround in `users.test.js` if you ever decide to convert `src/services` to ESM. That's outside this task's constraint of leaving `src/` alone.",
