Summary
Exact prompt
# Resolve merge conflicts in config files Inputs: `conflicted/` holds INI-style config files left with git-style conflict blocks (`<<<<<<< ours` / `=======` / `>>>>>>> theirs`, one `key = value` line per side). `base/` holds the same files as they were at the common ancestor. Resolve every conflict block with the first rule that applies: 1. Version keys (key name ends in `version`): keep the higher version, comparing dot-separated parts as numbers. 2. List keys (key name ends in `_list`, comma-separated values): keep the union, ours items first in their order, then items only in theirs in their order, joined with ", ". 3. If exactly one side changed the key relative to base/, keep that side. 4. Otherwise keep ours. - Write each resolved file to out/ under the same relative path (e.g. `conflicted/app/db.ini` -> `out/app/db.ini`), with no conflict markers and every line outside the conflict blocks unchanged and in place. - Also write `out/report.json`: `{"conflicts": <total blocks>, "by_rule": {"version": n, "list": n, "one_side": n, "ours": n}}`. ## How this run works - Work on your own: nobody will answer questions in this task, and writing to `ask/` counts against the run. - Write only under `out/`. Create `out/` if it is missing. Inputs are synthetic; don't fetch anything from the network. - Scoring is partial credit: each listed check is pass/fail, and the score is the share passed. Numbers are compared to within 0.005 unless the task says otherwise.
Resolve 10-40 git-style conflict blocks across 3-5 INI config files using four ordered rules: numeric version max, list union, one-sided change against the base copy, and otherwise ours. Every seed includes a version pair that string comparison gets wrong (such as 2.9 vs 2.10), and lines outside the conflicts must survive untouched. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price estimate (measured tokens x the site's price table).
Success criteria: files_clean_and_unconflicted_lines_kept version_keys_numeric_max list_keys_union one_sided_changes_kept both_changed_keep_ours report_counts
Setup notes: Batch 16 case r03-merge-conflicts (offline, synthetic inputs, seed 96426825). Autonomous case: no stand-in user and the agent never needs to check with the user; any file the solver wrote to ask/ is counted as a measured intervention (0) and blocks a pass. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Hidden key kept outside the solver's work dir. Scored on the box with the case's scorer; pass = every check true and no ask/ files. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 0.79 (8 cores). Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max 16,000 output tokens per call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.05, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x Venice list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via Venice OpenAI-compatible API (max 16,000 output tokens per call, $0.05 run cap). Score: 6/6. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured per-call tokens x Venice list price (paid from Venice DIEM allowance; Venice billing not itemized). input_tokens include cached reads. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

"final_message": "The task was to resolve merge conflicts in INI-style configuration files based on a set of specific rules. I implemented a Python script that iterates through the `conflicted/` directory, identifies conflict blocks, and applies the rules in order: version comparison for `version` keys, union of items for `_list` keys, keeping the side that changed relative to the `base/` version, and defaulting to \"ours\" if none of the above apply. The resolved files were written to the `out/` directory, and a summary report was generated in `out/report.json`.\n\nSummary of actions:\n1. Created a Python script `resolve.py` to handle the conflict resolution logic.\n2. Implemented version comparison for dot-separated numeric versions.\n3. Implemented list union logic preserving the order of \"ours\" then \"theirs\".\n4. Implemented base-comparison logic to detect which side modified a key.\n5. Ensured that lines outside conflict blocks and file line endings were preserved.\n6. Generated `out/report.json` with the total number of conflicts and a breakdown by the rule used for resolution.\n7. Verified the output for a sample file.\n\nFinal report:\n- Total conflicts resolved: 31\n- Rules applied:\n - version: 12\n - list: 5\n - one_side: 8\n - ours: 6\n\nThe resolved files are located in the `out/` directory.\n\nFinal Summary: Resolved all merge conflicts in the provided INI files according to the specified rules and generated the required report.json.",

Wait, I used `content=...` and `path=...` but maybe I should check the tool definition again.\n\nActually, the error `ERROR: 'path'` might be because I didn't provide the `path` argument in the way the tool expects, or I just messed up the call. Let me re-examine the `write_file` tool definition.\n`write_file{description: \"Create or overwrite a text file with full content\", parameters: {properties: {content: {type: \"STRING\"}, path: {type: \"STRING\"}}, required: [\"path\", \"content\"], type: \"OBJECT\"}}`\n\nI used:\n`write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"resolve.py\"}` (Wait, I didn't actually write `path=\"resolve.py\"` in the previous call, I just wrote the content and the path was missing in my thought process but I see it in the tool call now).\n\nWait, looking at the previous tool call:\n`write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"resolve.py\"}` is not what I wrote. I wrote:\n`write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"resolve.py\"}`? No, I wrote:\n`write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"resolve.py\"}` (I'm misreading my own history).\n\nLet me look at the actual tool call I sent:\n`write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"resolve.py\"}` (Wait, I see it now in the history).\nActually, I didn't specify the path in the `write_file` call in the previous turn. I just wrote `content: \"...\"` and forgot the `path`.\n\nWait, I see it now:\n`write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"resolve.py\"}` was NOT what I sent. "reasoning_content": "Okay, I have implemented the logic and run it. I should double check the list union logic.\n\"keep the union, ours items first in their order, then items only in theirs in their order, joined with \", \".\"\nMy code:\n```python\n ours_items = [i.strip() for i in ours_val.split(',') if i.strip()]\n theirs_items = [i.strip() for i in theirs_val.split(',') if i.strip()]\n \n union = []\n seen = set()\n for item in ours_items:\n if item not in seen:\n union.append(item)\n seen.add(item)\n for item in theirs_items:\n if item not in seen:\n union.append(item)\n seen.add(item)\n \n resolved_val = \", \".join(union)\n```\nThis looks correct. It maintains the order of `ours` and then adds items from `theirs` that weren't in `ours`.\n\nLet's check the version comparison.\n\"keep the higher version, comparing dot-separated parts as numbers.\"\nMy code:\n```python\ndef compare_versions(v1, v2):\n parts1 = [int(x) for x in v1.split('.')]\n parts2 = [int(x) for x in v2.split('.')]\n for p1, p2 in zip(parts1, parts2):\n if p1 > p2:\n return 1\n if p1 < p2:\n return -1\n if len(parts1) > len(parts2):\n return 1\n if len(parts1) < len(parts2):\n return -1\n return 0\n```\nThis also looks correct.\n\nLet's check the \"one side changed\" rule.\n\"If exactly one side changed the key relative to base/, keep that side.\"\nMy code:\n```python\n # Rule 3: One side changed relative to base\n ours_changed = (ours_val != base_val)\n theirs_changed = (theirs_val != base_val)\n \n if ours_changed and not theirs_changed:\n return ours_line, 'one_side'\n if theirs_changed and not ours_changed:\n return theirs_line, 'one_side'\n```\nThis also looks correct.\n\nWait, I should check if `base_val` is `None` (key not in base).\nIf `base_val` is `None`, then `ours_val != base_val` is always true (unless `ours_val` is also `None`, which it isn't).\nIf both `ours_val` and `theirs_val` are different from `None` and `base_val` is `None`, then both `ours_changed` and `theirs_changed` will be true, and it will fall through to Rule 4 (keep ours).\nIs this correct?\nIf the key is missing in base, then both sides \"changed\" it (by adding it). So neither \"exactly one side changed\". So Rule 4 applies. This seems correct.\n\nOne detail: \"Write each resolved file to out/ under the same relative path... with no conflict markers and every line outside the conflict blocks unchanged and in place.\"\nMy code uses `splitlines()` and `\"\\n\".join(resolved_lines)`.\nIf the original file had different line endings or trailing newlines, this might change them.\nThe prompt says \"every line outside the conflict blocks unchanged and in place\".\nLet's check if I should use a more robust way to preserve line endings.\nActually, `splitlines()` without `keepends=True` removes the line endings.\nIf I use `splitlines(keepends=True)`, I can preserve them.\n\nLet's refine the `main` loop to be more careful about line endings.\n\n```python\n lines = conflicted_content.splitlines(keepends=True)\n resolved_lines = []\n i = 0\n while i < len(lines):\n line = lines[i]\n if line.startswith('<<<<<<< ours'):\n # ours_line is at i+1\n # ======= is at i+2\n # theirs_line is at i+3\n # >>>>>>> theirs is at i+4\n ours_line = lines[i+1].rstrip('\\n\\r')\n theirs_line = lines[i+3].rstrip('\\n\\r')\n \n key = ours_line.split('=', 1)[0].strip()\n base_val_full = None\n if key in base_data:\n base_val_full = f\"{key} = {base_data[key]}\"\n \n resolved_line, rule = resolve_conflict(ours_line, theirs_line, base_val_full, key)\n \n total_conflicts += 1\n stats[rule] += 1\n # We should add a newline to the resolved line to match the original structure\n resolved_lines.append(resolved_line + '\\n')\n i += 5\n else:\n resolved_lines.append(line)\n i += 1\n \n final_content = \"\".join(resolved_lines)\n```\nWait, if the original file didn't have a newline at the end of the `theirs_line` (which is unlikely but possible), or if the `>>>>>>> theirs` line was the last line and didn't have a newline, this might be slightly off. But usually, INI files have newlines.\n\nLet's check the `conflicted/app/db.ini` again.\n```\n<<<<<<< ours\nhost_features0 = 842\n=======\nhost_features0 = 357\n>>>>>>> theirs\n```\nThe `>>>>>>> theirs` line is followed by another conflict or a regular line.\nIf I use `splitlines(keepends=True)`, `lines[i]` will be `<<<<<<< ours\\n`.\n`lines[i+1]` will be `host_features0 = 842\\n`.\n`lines[i+2]` will be `=======\\n`.\n`lines[i+3]` will be `host_features0 = 357\\n`.\n`lines[i+4]` will be `>>>>>>> theirs\\n`.\n\nIf I replace these 5 lines with one line `resolved_line + '\\n'`, I am replacing 5 lines with 1 line.\nIs that what's intended?\n\"Write each resolved file... with no conflict markers and every line outside the conflict blocks unchanged and in place.\"\nYes, the conflict block (5 lines) should be replaced by the resolved line.\n\nWait, if the conflict block is:\n```\n<<<<<<< ours\nkey = val1\n=======\nkey = val2\n>>>>>>> theirs\n```\nThis is 5 lines. It should be replaced by 1 line: `key = resolved_val`.\nMy current logic does that.\n\nLet's double check the `resolve_conflict` return value.\nFor `list` rule: `return f\"{key} = {resolved_val}\", 'list'`\nFor others: `return ours_line, 'ours'` (where `ours_line` was `lines[i+1].rstrip('\\n\\r')`).\nSo it returns a string without a newline.\nThen I add `+ '\\n'`.\n\nOne more thing: what if the conflict block is at the very end of the file and `>>>>>>> theirs` doesn't have a newline?\n`lines[i+4]` would be `>>>>>>> theirs` without `\\n`.\nMy code would still add `\\n` to the resolved line. This might add a trailing newline if there wasn't one.\nBut the prompt says \"every line outside the conflict blocks unchanged\". It doesn't explicitly say the file must have the exact same number of bytes, but usually, it's better to be precise.\n\nActually, the most reliable way to handle this is to use a regex that captures the whole block including the trailing newline of the last marker.\n\n```python\n pattern = re.compile(r'<<<<<<< ours\\n(.*?)\\n=======\\n(.*?)\\n>>>>>>> theirs\\n?', re.DOTALL)\n```\nBut `re.sub` might be tricky with the stats.\n\nLet's use the `splitlines(keepends=True)` approach but be careful.\nIf `lines[i+4]` (the `>>>>>>> theirs` line) ends with a newline, I'll add a newline. If it doesn't, I won't.\n\n```python\n # ...\n resolved_line, rule = resolve_conflict(ours_line, theirs_line, base_val_full, key)\n \n total_conflicts += 1\n stats[rule] += 1\n \n # Preserve the newline if the last line of the conflict block had one\n suffix = '\\n' if lines[i+4].endswith('\\n') else ''\n resolved_lines.append(resolved_line + suffix)\n i += 5\n```\n\nAlso, I should make sure `ours_line` and `theirs_line` are stripped of their newlines before being passed to `resolve_conflict`. I already did `rstrip('\\n\\r')`.\n\nLet's refine the script and run it again.",

"reasoning_content": "Okay, I've implemented the logic to resolve merge conflicts in INI-style config files based on the specified rules. I've handled version keys, list keys, one-side changes, and the default \"ours\" rule. I've also ensured that the output files maintain the original structure and that a `report.json` is generated.\n\nLet me double check the list rule: \"keep the union, ours items first in their order, then items only in theirs in their order, joined with \", \"\".\nMy implementation:\n```python\n union = []\n seen = set()\n for item in ours_items:\n if item not in seen:\n union.append(item)\n seen.add(item)\n for item in theirs_items:\n if item not in seen:\n union.append(item)\n seen.add(item)\n \n resolved_val = \", \".join(union)\n```\nThis correctly implements the union while preserving order and avoiding duplicates, with ours first.\n\nOne more check on the version rule: \"keep the higher version, comparing dot-separated parts as numbers.\"\nMy implementation:\n```python\ndef compare_versions(v1, v2):\n parts1 = [int(x) for x in v1.split('.')]\n parts2 = [int(x) for x in v2.split('.')]\n for p1, p2 in zip(parts1, parts2):\n if p1 > p2:\n return 1\n if p1 < p2:\n return -1\n if len(parts1) > len(parts2):\n return 1\n if len(parts1) < len(parts2):\n return -1\n return 0\n```\nThis correctly compares versions numerically part by part.\n\nOne more check on the \"one side changed\" rule: \"If exactly one side changed the key relative to base/, keep that side.\"\nMy implementation:\n```python\n ours_changed = (ours_val != base_val)\n theirs_changed = (theirs_val != base_val)\n \n if ours_changed and not theirs_changed:\n return ours_line, 'one_side'\n if theirs_changed and not ours_changed:\n return theirs_line, 'one_side'\n```\nThis correctly identifies if only one side changed relative to the base value.\n\nThe output files are written to `out/` and the report is written to `out/report.json`.\n\nI'll run the script one last time to be sure.",

"role": "assistant",
"content": "The task was to resolve merge conflicts in INI-style configuration files based on a set of specific rules.
