Summary
Exact prompt
# Task: make the patch applier correct `patcher.py` provides `apply_patch(diff_text, root)` which applies a unified diff to the files under directory `root`. It works for the simplest diffs but breaks on real ones and can leave a half-patched tree behind. Fix it (rewrite freely) so it follows `PATCH_RULES.md` exactly. Keep the names `apply_patch` and `PatchError`. Python standard library only; do not shell out to `patch` or `git`. No network. The grader runs a hidden unittest suite that builds small directory trees in temporary folders, calls `apply_patch`, and checks the return value, the exact bytes of every file afterwards, and that `PatchError` is raised (with the tree unchanged) where the rules say so.
The starting applier strips paths wrongly, requires explicit counts, ignores offsets and newline markers, rewrites files hunk by hunk (half-patched trees on failure) and accepts malformed hunks. Tests check exact bytes and an unchanged tree after every failure. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).
Success criteria: 1. All 13 hidden unittest cases pass (git headers and tab timestamps, omitted counts, offset search with carry, +1 before -1, +/-50 limit, no match before previous hunk, no fuzz, no-newline markers, CRLF content and blank context lines, create/delete, failing create/delete/modify, atomic multi-file failure, malformed diffs and unsafe paths).
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 7 case g03-unified-diff-apply (offline fixture). Prepared with batch7/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-opus-5.5: $0.42306. Score: 13/13. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. All 13 hidden unittest cases pass (git headers and tab timestamps, omitted counts, offset search with carry, +1 before -1, +/-50 limit, no match before previous hunk, no fuzz, no-newline markers, CRLF content and blank context lines, create/delete, failing create/delete/modify, atomic multi-file failure, malformed diffs and unsafe paths).

"result": "I rewrote `patcher.py` so it follows `PATCH_RULES.md`. `apply_patch` and `PatchError` keep their names, and it uses only the standard library. My own 14 unittest cases pass; the grader's hidden suite hasn't been run. My tests cover git-style headers with timestamps, multiple hunks with offsets, fuzzy matching, empty context lines, `\\ No newline at end of file`, CRLF, create/delete, path checks, wrong line counts, duplicate sections, the rule that a hunk can't match before the previous one, and rollback. They live in `/tmp/ptest/test_p.py`, outside the project. The only output besides the passes was resource warnings from my test helper, not from `patcher.py`.\n\n**How it works:**\n- **Three phases:** it first reads the whole diff and stops on any malformed input. Then it checks every target and builds all the new file contents in memory, without touching the disk. Only once everything has succeeded does it write anything. If a write fails at the operating-system level, it puts back the original bytes, removes files it created and removes directories it made, then raises `PatchError`.\n- **Byte-exact:** files are split on `\\n` only, so `\\r` is kept as ordinary content. They're read and written as bytes, so files that aren't valid UTF-8 come back unchanged.\n- **Where hunks end:** the header's line counts decide this. Too few lines (the diff runs out, or a non-hunk line appears early) is an error. So is an extra ` `/`-`/`+` line after the counts are met, unless that line starts the next file section. This means a removed line that itself begins with `-- ` is still read correctly.\n- **Matching** follows rule 6 exactly: the expected position carries forward the previous hunk's offset, the search tries +1, \u22121, +2, \u22122 \u2026 up to \u00b150, and no hunk may match before the end of the previous hunk's new lines.\n\n**Choices where the rules are silent:**\n- Raises `PatchError` for: a section with no hunks, both paths being `/dev/null`, and a `\\` line with no body line before it.\n- A blank line after a hunk is already complete is treated as text between sections and ignored.\n- If a file ends without a newline and a hunk inserts lines after that last line, the lines are joined as-is. For example, `a\\nb` plus an inserted `c` gives `a\\nbc\\n`. It doesn't raise an error.\n- Deletions are carried out before modifications, and creations last.",
