Exact prompt
# Weighted results for a two-wave customer survey Inputs: `responses.csv`, `waves.json` (per wave: the unit of the income column), `population.json` (each region's share of the customer base). Rules: - One person may have answered more than once. Emails are case-insensitive and may carry stray spaces. Keep only each person's latest submission by actual time; submitted_at carries different UTC offsets. - Drop respondents (after de-duplication) whose age is blank or under 18. - In q1-q3, the code 99 means "don't know": leave it out of that question only. - Income is in the unit given for the response's wave in waves.json: "USD" or "kUSD" (thousands of USD). Report income in USD. - Weight for every kept respondent in region g = population share of g / (kept respondents in g / all kept respondents). - Weighted mean = sum(weight x value) / sum(weight) over the kept respondents who have a valid value. Round q means half-up to 3 decimals and income half-up to 2 decimals. Write `out/survey.json`: `{"n": <kept respondents>, "region_n": {"<region>": <int>, ...}, "weighted_means": {"q1": <n>, "q2": <n>, "q3": <n>}, "weighted_mean_income_usd": <n>}`. q means are checked to within 0.0005. ## How this run works - Work on your own: nobody will answer questions in this task, and writing to `ask/` counts against the run. - Write only under `out/`. Create `out/` if it is missing. Inputs are synthetic; don't fetch anything from the network. - Scoring is partial credit: each listed check is pass/fail, and the score is the share passed. Numbers are compared to within 0.005 unless the task says otherwise.
Clean about 2,500-3,500 survey responses and compute region-weighted means for three questions and income. Repeat respondents must be matched case- and space-insensitively and only their latest submission kept, comparing timestamps with mixed UTC offsets. Minors are dropped, 'don't know' codes are excluded per question, and one wave reports income in thousands. Means near rounding ties are redrawn. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is measured tokens x Venice list price and matches the amount Venice reported billing.
Success criteria: dedup_kept_count region_counts q1_mean q2_q3_means income_units_and_weights
Setup notes: Batch 17 case s04-survey-weighting (offline, synthetic inputs, seed 2227413001). Autonomous case: no stand-in user and the agent never needs to check with the user; any file the solver wrote to ask/ is counted as a measured intervention (0) and blocks a pass. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Hidden key kept outside the solver's work dir. Scored on the box with the case's scorer; pass = every check true and no ask/ files. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 0.65 (8 cores). Time-zone results depend on the system time-zone database: tzdata 2026e-0+deb13u1 (Python zoneinfo). Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max 16,000 output tokens per call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.05, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x Venice list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. Score: 5/5. Cost is measured per-call tokens x Venice list price and matches the amount Venice reported billing. Input tokens include cached reads.

"final_message": "The task required processing a customer survey dataset across two waves, handling de-duplication based on case-insensitive emails and actual submission times (considering UTC offsets), filtering respondents by age, and calculating weighted means for three questions and income.\n\nThe implementation followed these steps:\n1. **Data Loading**: Loaded `population.json`, `waves.json`, and `responses.csv`.\n2. **De-duplication**: Normalized emails (trimmed and lowercased) and used `datetime.fromisoformat` to compare submission times across different time zones, keeping only the latest response for each person.\n3. **Filtering**: Removed respondents with missing or under-18 ages.\n4. **Weight Calculation**: Computed weights for each respondent based on their region's population share relative to the proportion of kept respondents in that region.\n5. **Weighted Mean Calculation**:\n - Handled \"don't know\" (code 99) by excluding those values from the calculation.\n - Converted income from `kUSD` to `USD` where applicable.\n - Calculated the weighted mean as $\\frac{\\sum (\\text{weight} \\times \\text{value})}{\\sum \\text{weight}}$ for respondents with valid values.\n6. **Rounding**: Used `Decimal` with `ROUND_HALF_UP` to round question means to 3 decimal places and income to 2 decimal places.\n7. **Output**: Wrote the final results to `out/survey.json`.\n\nFinal summary of results:\n- Total kept respondents (`n`): 2191\n- Regional distribution (`region_n`): North: 460, East: 336, West: 483, South: 682, Central: 230\n- Weighted means for q1, q2, q3: 3.341, 3.195, 3.089\n- Weighted mean income (USD): 128364.52",

"reasoning_content": "The user wants to calculate weighted means for a customer survey.\n\nInputs:\n- `responses.csv`: Survey responses.\n- `waves.json`: Income unit per wave.\n- `population.json`: Population share per region.\n\nRules:\n1. **De-duplication**:\n - Emails are case-insensitive and may have stray spaces.\n - Keep only the latest submission per person based on `submitted_at` (which has different UTC offsets).\n2. **Filtering**:\n - Drop respondents whose age is blank or under 18.\n3. **Data Cleaning**:\n - In q1-q3, code 99 means \"don't know\" and should be excluded from the mean calculation for that specific question.\n - Income is in the unit given for the response's wave in `waves.json` (\"USD\" or \"kUSD\"). Convert all to USD.\n4. **Weighting**:\n - Weight for respondent in region $g = \\frac{\\text{population share of } g}{\\text{kept respondents in } g / \\text{all kept respondents}}$.\n - This can be rewritten as: $\\text{weight}_g = \\frac{\\text{population share of } g \\times \\text{total kept respondents}}{\\text{kept respondents in } g}$.\n5. **Weighted Mean**:\n - $\\text{Weighted Mean} = \\frac{\\sum (\\text{weight} \\times \\text{value})}{\\sum \\text{weight}}$ over kept respondents who have a valid value.\n6. **Rounding**:\n - q means: half-up to 3 decimals.\n - income mean: half-up to 2 decimals.\n7. **Output**:\n - `out/survey.json` with:\n - `n`: total kept respondents.\n - `region_n`: number of kept respondents per region.\n - `weighted_means`: weighted means for q1, q2, q3.\n - `weighted_mean_income_usd`: weighted mean for income.\n\nLet's start by writing a Python script to perform these calculations.\n\nPlan:\n1. Read `population.json` and `waves.json`.\n2. Read `responses.csv`.\n3. Clean emails (strip and lowercase).\n4. Parse `submitted_at` to handle UTC offsets and find the latest response per email.\n5. Filter by age (>= 18 and not blank).\n6. Convert income to USD based on wave.\n7. Calculate weights per region.\n8. Calculate weighted means for q1, q2, q3, and income.\n9. Round results and write to `out/survey.json`.\n\nWait, the `responses.csv` file seems to be truncated in the `read_file` output. I should check if it's actually truncated or if it's just a long file. The `read_file` output ends with `...`. I should probably use `run_shell` to read it or just assume it's a full file and the tool just truncated the display. Actually, `read_file` should return the full content. Let me check the end of the file.\n\nActually, looking at the `read_file` output, it ends with `...` which usually means it was truncated by the tool's output limit. I should be careful. But I can just read the file in my script.\n\nLet's write the script.",

"reasoning_content": "The `write_file` tool requires `path` and `content`. I used `path` and `content` in the call, but I might have made a mistake in the tool call format or the tool might have failed for some other reason. Wait, looking at the `write_file` declaration: `parameters:{properties:{content:{type:STRING},path:{type:STRING}},required:[path,content],type:OBJECT}`. My call was `write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"out/survey.json\"}`. This should be correct. Let me re-examine the error: `ERROR: 'path'`. This is strange. Maybe it's because I didn't provide the arguments as a JSON object? No, the tool call format is correct.\n\nWait, I see what happened. I used `write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"out/survey.json\"}`. Let me try again. I'll use a simpler script first to make sure the environment is working.\n\nActually, I'll just try to run the script I wrote by writing it to a file first using `write_file` and then running it with `run_shell`.\n\nWait, I just noticed that the `write_file` tool call in my previous turn was:\n`write_file{content: \"...\", path: \"out/survey.json\"}`\nWait, I was writing the *Python code* into `out/survey.json`? No, I was trying to write the Python code to a file, but I didn't specify the filename correctly in my mind. I should write the Python code to `solution.py` and then run it.\n\nLet me try again.",

"role": "assistant",
"content": "The task required processing a customer survey dataset across two waves, handling de-duplication based on case-insensitive emails and actual submission times (considering UTC offsets), filtering respondents by age, and calculating weighted means for three questions and income.\n\nThe implementation followed these steps:\n1. **Output**: Wrote the final results to `out/survey.json`.\n\nFinal summary of results:\n- Total kept respondents (`n`): 2191\n- Regional distribution (`region_n`): North: 460, East: 336, West: 483, South: 682, Central: 230\n- Weighted means for q1, q2, q3: 3.341, 3.195, 3.089\n- Weighted mean income (USD): 128364.52",
"reasoning_content": "The user wants to calculate weighted results for a customer survey.\nI have implemented the logic in `solution.py` and it produced `out/survey.json`.\n\nLet's double check the rules:\n- One person may have answered more than once. Emails are case-insensitive and may carry stray spaces. Keep only each person's latest submission by actual time; submitted_at carries different UTC offsets. (Implemented)\n- Drop respondents (after de-duplication) whose age is blank or under 18. (Implemented)\n- In q1-q3, the code 99 means \"don't know\": leave it out of that question only. (Implemented)\n- Income is in the unit given for the response's wave in waves.json: \"USD\" or \"kUSD\" (thousands of USD). Report income in USD. (Implemented)\n- Weight for every kept respondent in region g = population share of g / (kept respondents in g / all kept respondents). (Implemented)\n- Weighted mean = sum(weight x value) / sum(weight) over the kept respondents who have a valid value. Round q means half-up to 3 decimals and income half-up to 2 decimals. (Implemented)\n\nWait, I used `float` for calculations. For high precision and half-up rounding, `Decimal` is better. I used `Decimal` for the final rounding, but the intermediate sums were `float`. Given the precision requirements (0.0005 for q means, 0.005 for others), `float` should be sufficient, but let's be careful.\n\nLet's re-verify the weight formula:\nWeight for respondent in region g = `population_share[g] / (region_n[g] / total_kept)`\n`weighted_mean = sum(weight * value) / sum(weight)`\n\nExample:\nIf region North has share 0.3 and 460 respondents out of 2191.\nWeight for each North respondent = 0.3 / (460 / 2191) = 0.3 * 2191 / 460.\nSum of weights for North = 460 * (0.3 * 2191 / 460) = 0.3 * 2191.\nSum of all weights = sum(population_share[g] * total_kept) = total_kept * sum(population_share) = 2191 * 1.0 = 2191.\n\nWait, the `sum(weight)` in the denominator of the weighted mean is over the *kept respondents who have a valid value*.\nIf some respondents in region North have a missing q1, their weight is not included in the denominator for q1.\n\nMy code:\n```python\n def calculate_weighted_mean(col, is_income=False):\n sum_weight_val = 0.0\n sum_weight = 0.0\n for resp in kept_respondents:\n val = get_value(resp, col)\n if val is None:\n continue\n \n if is_income:\n wave = resp['wave']\n unit = waves[wave]['income_unit']\n if unit == 'kUSD':\n val *= 1000\n \n weight = weights[resp['resp_id']]\n sum_weight_val += weight * val\n sum_weight += weight\n \n if sum_weight == 0:\n return 0.0\n return sum_weight_val / sum_weight\n```\nThis correctly implements `sum(weight * value) / sum(weight)` over respondents with valid values.\n\nOne detail: \"Round q means half-up to 3 decimals and income half-up to 2 decimals.\"\nI used `round_half_up` which uses `Decimal.quantize` with `ROUND_HALF_UP`. This is the correct way to do half-up rounding in Python.\n\nLet's check the `submitted_at` parsing.\n`datetime.fromisoformat` handles offsets like `+09:00` and `-08:00` correctly.\n\nOne more check on the de-duplication:\n\"Keep only each person's latest submission by actual time; submitted_at carries different UTC offsets.\"\nMy code:\n```python\n latest_responses = {}\n for resp in responses:\n email = resp['email'].strip().lower()\n submitted_at = parse_date(resp['submitted_at'])\n if email not in latest_responses or submitted_at > latest_responses[email]['submitted_at']:\n latest_responses[email] = {\n 'data': resp,\n 'submitted_at': submitted_at\n }\n```\nThis compares `datetime` objects which are offset-aware, so it correctly compares actual time.\n\nThe `resp_id` is used as a key for weights. I should ensure `resp_id` is unique for the kept respondents. Since I'm iterating over `latest_responses.items()`, and each entry is a single response, `resp_id` from that response should be unique.\n\nWait, I should check if `resp_id` can be missing or if there are any other issues. The CSV seems to have `resp_id` for all rows.\n\nLet's double check the income unit conversion.\n`waves.json` has:\n\"1\": {\"income_unit\": \"USD\"}\n\"2\": {\"income_unit\": \"kUSD\"}\nMy code:\n```python\n if is_income:\n wave = resp['wave']\n unit = waves[wave]['income_unit']\n if unit == 'kUSD':\n val *= 1000\n```\nThis is correct.\n\nThe `population.json` shares:\nNorth: 0.3, South: 0.25, East: 0.2, West: 0.15, Central: 0.1.\nSum = 0.3 + 0.25 + 0.2 + 0.15 + 0.1 = 1.0.\n\nFinal check on the output format:\n`{\"n\": <kept respondents>, \"region_n\": {\"<region>\": <int>, ...}, \"weighted_means\": {\"q1\": <n>, \"q2\": <n>, \"q3\": <n>}, \"weighted_mean_income_usd\": <n>}`.\nMy output:\n```json\n{\n \"n\": 2191,\n \"region_n\": {\n \"North\": 460,\n \"East\": 336,\n \"West\": 483,\n \"South\": 682,\n \"Central\": 230\n },\n \"weighted_means\": {\n \"q1\": 3.341,\n \"q2\": 3.195,\n \"q3\": 3.089\n },\n \"weighted_mean_income_usd\": 128364.52\n}\n```\nThis matches the required format.\n\nI'll run the script one more time to be sure and then finish.",
