Summary
Exact prompt
# Task: fix the feed pagination Users report that the item feed served by `feed.py` skips items, shows duplicates, returns short pages when filtering, and sometimes offers a "next page" link that leads to an empty page. Fix `list_items` in `feed.py` (rewrite freely) so it follows `PAGINATION.md` exactly. Python standard library only (`sqlite3`). Keep the function name and signature. You may not change the table schema in `schema.sql`. No network. The grader runs a hidden unittest suite: it builds SQLite databases with `schema.sql` (hundreds of items, many sharing the same `created_at`), walks pages with various limits, filters and orders, inserts and deletes rows between page requests, and feeds invalid arguments.
The starting code paginates on created_at alone (skips ties), filters after LIMIT (short pages), emits a next cursor for an exactly-full last page, interpolates order into SQL and accepts any cursor. Hidden walks with inserts/deletes between pages expose each bug. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).
Success criteria: 1. All 10 hidden unittest cases pass (schema unchanged, item shape, desc and asc walks with ties at several limits, filtered pages exactly full, exactly-full last page has no cursor, limit/order validation, injection-safe status, bad/mismatched cursors raise ValueError, inserts/deletes between pages).
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 7 case g05-cursor-pagination-bugs (offline fixture). Prepared with batch7/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-opus-5.5: $0.178883. Score: 10/10. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. All 10 hidden unittest cases pass (schema unchanged, item shape, desc and asc walks with ties at several limits, filtered pages exactly full, exactly-full last page has no cursor, limit/order validation, injection-safe status, bad/mismatched cursors raise ValueError, inserts/deletes between pages).

"result": "I rewrote `list_items` in `feed.py` to follow `PAGINATION.md`, and my own test script passes. I haven't run the hidden grader suite.\n\n**What was causing each reported problem:**\n- **Skipped items and duplicates:** pages were split only on `created_at`, so items sharing a timestamp at a page boundary were lost. Paging now uses the pair (`created_at`, `id`) for both sort order and position, so ties are handled.\n- **Short pages when filtering:** the status filter ran in Python after `LIMIT` had already been applied. It is now part of the SQL query, and the status value is passed as a parameter, never pasted into the SQL.\n- **\"Next page\" links to empty pages:** a cursor was offered whenever a page came back full. Now the query fetches one extra row (`limit + 1`), and `next_cursor` is set only if that row exists. A last page that is exactly full therefore gets `None`.\n\n**Validation:**\n- `limit` must be an `int` from 1 to 100. `True`, `5.0` and `\"5\"` are rejected.\n- `order` must be `\"desc\"` or `\"asc\"`.\n- `status` must be a string or `None`.\n- Anything wrong raises `ValueError`.\n\n**Cursors:** each cursor is base64 data holding the order, status, last `created_at` and last `id`, signed with an HMAC. An empty, made-up, corrupted or non-string cursor raises `ValueError`, and so does one used with a different status or order than the call that produced it. The signing key is a fixed constant in `feed.py`. That is enough to catch corruption, but anyone who reads the source could forge a cursor; if that matters, load a secret key from configuration instead.\n\n**Test results:** my script is in `/tmp/feedtest/t.py`, outside the project. It builds databases from `schema.sql` with 400 items spread over only 5 timestamps and covers:\n- complete walks in both orders, with all statuses and with each filter, at limits 1, 7, 20 and 100, each compared against a plain sorted query;\n- inserting a newer item and deleting an already-returned item partway through a walk, which gave no skips, no repeats and no new item;\n- bad cursors, mismatched cursors, invalid limits, and an injection-style status string.\n\nOne gap: the script never directly checks that a full last page returns `next_cursor=None`. The extra-row check is what ensures it.\n\nThe function name, signature and `schema.sql` are unchanged, and only the standard library is used.",
