Summary

Exact prompt

This repository (toolbelt, CommonJS, Node 20) has a Jest test suite: 60 tests in 9 files under test/, plus jest.config.js and test/setup.js. Migrate the whole suite from Jest to Vitest. Vitest 3 is already installed in node_modules (there is no network access, so do not install packages). When fully done: `npx vitest run` passes all 60 tests with none skipped or removed, there are no remaining uses of the jest global or Jest APIs, Jest is removed from package.json and its config is deleted, and `npm test` runs Vitest. Keep the library code in src/ unchanged. We will do this in three working sessions with breaks in between. In THIS session, set up Vitest (config incl. the @/ path alias, the setup file with the custom matcher, package.json scripts) and migrate only the tests in test/text/. Make sure those pass under Vitest, then stop and summarize what is left. ---- NEXT SEGMENT (after idle gap, --resume) ---- I'm back from my break. Continue the migration: in this session migrate the tests in test/time/ to Vitest and make sure they pass. Then stop and summarize what is left. ---- NEXT SEGMENT (after idle gap, --resume) ---- Back again. Finish the migration: migrate test/services/, remove Jest completely (dependency, config, any leftover jest APIs), make `npm test` run Vitest, and confirm `npx vitest run` passes all 60 tests with none skipped.

Migrate a Jest test suite (~300 tests) to Vitest autonomously. Inject 10-minute pauses every 30 minutes to simulate a human stepping away. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).

Success criteria: 100% tests pass under Vitest; no skipped tests added; record cache-read/write tokens.

Setup notes: Synthetic CommonJS library 'toolbelt' with 60 Jest 29 tests (fake timers, jest.mock factories, spyOn, requireActual, snapshots incl. inline, test.each tables, done callbacks, custom matcher, moduleNameMapper). Vitest 3 preinstalled, no network. Run as 3 segments of one Claude Code session joined by --resume, with 70-minute idle gaps (longer than the 1h prompt-cache TTL Claude Code uses) to emulate a human stepping away. Scale-down of the scouted 300-test case. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Idle gaps between turns were simulated (not real wall-clock waits). Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-sonnet-5.5: $0.490701. Score: 7/7. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run

  1. Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
  2. Same setup: Claude Sonnet 5.5 (anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5, effort default (no --effort flag) · thinking on) via Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud.
  3. It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 100% tests pass under Vitest; no skipped tests added; record cache-read/write tokens.
  4. Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

I did not run the other six files.\n\n**What changed**\n- **`vitest.config.js` (new):**\n - Node environment, `globals: true`, `clearMocks: true`, and `setupFiles: ['./test/setup.js']`.\n - The `@/` alias points at `src/`.\n - It only picks up `test/**/*.test.js`.\n- **`package.json`:** `npm test` now runs `vitest run`.\n- **`test/setup.js`:** unchanged. The `toBeSlug` matcher works as-is because globals are on.\n- **`test/text/*.test.js`:** the `require(...)` calls became `import ... from '@/text'`. Vitest's alias only applies to `import`, not `require`, so the `@/` paths don't resolve under `require`. The other test files will need the same change. `format.test.js` previously used a relative path and now uses `@/` too.\n- **`template.test.js.snap`:** I edited it by hand to Vitest's format: new header line, and keys like `template > fills placeholders 1`. That way the stored values are still compared. The inline snapshot needed no change.\n- **`src/`:** untouched.\n\n**Left for the next sessions**\n- **Migrate the remaining tests** (35 tests in `test/time/` and `test/services/`):\n - `time/debounce`, `time/retry`, `time/duration`\n - `services/users`, `services/http`, `services/logger`\n - Convert their `require` calls to `import`.\n - Replace Jest APIs with Vitest equivalents: `jest.fn`, `jest.spyOn`, `jest.useFakeTimers`, `jest.mock`, and so on become `vi.*`. `jest.mock` factories may need `vi.hoisted` or a rewrite, since `require`-based mocking behaves differently.\n - I haven't opened these files yet, so I don't know which APIs they use.\n- **Remove Jest** (final cleanup):\n - Delete `jest.config.js`.\n - Remove `jest` from `devDependencies`.\n - Check that no `jest` references remain. The lockfile will also have Jest entries, which I can't regenerate without network access.\n- **Decide whether to keep `globals: true`** or switch to explicit `import { describe, it, expect, vi } from 'vitest'`. I kept globals to keep this session's diff small.\n- **Run the full suite** and confirm all 60 tests pass.\n\nJest is still in `package.json` and `jest.config.js` is still there. I left both on purpose until the other tests are migrated.",

I rewrote it as an `async` test that awaits the `sleep(...)` promise. It checks the same thing.\n- **`src/` and `vitest.config.js`:** unchanged.\n\n**Left for the next session**\n- **Migrate `test/services/`:** `users.test.js`, `http.test.js` and `logger.test.js`. The test now loads `http`, `logger` and `users` through `createRequire`, so it gets the same module instances `src/` uses. It then replaces `http.getJson`, `http.postJson` and `logger.info` with `vi.spyOn(...).mockImplementation(...)`. This works because `users.js` calls them as `http.x` and `logger.x`. The tests assert on call counts and arguments, so the mocks are being hit.\n- **Relative paths:** this file uses relative paths to `src/services/...` rather than `@/`, because `createRequire` doesn't apply the alias.\n\n**Jest removal**\n- **Config and dependency:** I deleted `jest.config.js` and removed `jest` from `devDependencies`. `vitest` moved from `dependencies` to `devDependencies`, and `npm test` runs `vitest run`.\n- **Leftover references:** a grep for \"jest\" in the repo (excluding `node_modules/` and `.git/`) finds nothing.\n- **Lockfile:** I regenerated `package-lock.json` with `npm install --package-lock-only --offline`, which worked without network. It no longer has any Jest entries. The diff is large (about 3,500 lines removed) because Jest's dependency tree is gone, so look it over before committing.\n- **`src/`:** unchanged.\n\nI haven't committed anything.",
