Summary
Exact prompt
# Task: make the patch applier correct `patcher.py` provides `apply_patch(diff_text, root)` which applies a unified diff to the files under directory `root`. It works for the simplest diffs but breaks on real ones and can leave a half-patched tree behind. Fix it (rewrite freely) so it follows `PATCH_RULES.md` exactly. Keep the names `apply_patch` and `PatchError`. Python standard library only; do not shell out to `patch` or `git`. No network. The grader runs a hidden unittest suite that builds small directory trees in temporary folders, calls `apply_patch`, and checks the return value, the exact bytes of every file afterwards, and that `PatchError` is raised (with the tree unchanged) where the rules say so.
The starting applier strips paths wrongly, requires explicit counts, ignores offsets and newline markers, rewrites files hunk by hunk (half-patched trees on failure) and accepts malformed hunks. Tests check exact bytes and an unchanged tree after every failure. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com. Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price API-equivalent estimate (run on a ChatGPT subscription, not billed).
Success criteria: 1. All 13 hidden unittest cases pass (git headers and tab timestamps, omitted counts, offset search with carry, +1 before -1, +/-50 limit, no match before previous hunk, no fuzz, no-newline markers, CRLF content and blank context lines, create/delete, failing create/delete/modify, atomic multi-file failure, malformed diffs and unsafe paths).
Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch7 case g03-unified-diff-apply (offline fixture). Prepared with batch7/prepare.sh on the shared box; only TASK.md + starting files were copied to the agent machine, hidden key/tests stayed on the box. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim on stdin. Flags: --json -s workspace-write --skip-git-repo-check --ephemeral --ignore-user-config --ignore-rules -C <workdir>. Scored on the box with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Single run, no retries. User-level AGENTS.md (846 bytes, sha256 83ec4fe50da8) may have been in context; --ignore-user-config does not document excluding it. Serving model not confirmed: requested via -m; the event log does not echo the serving model id. Price source is secondary (pricing.json verification='secondary', https://www.actuia.com/en/news/ai-api-pricing-in-october-2026-050-to-50-for-output/), not an official OpenAI price page. Score: 13/13. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (ChatGPT plan, nothing billed); input_tokens include cached reads; output_tokens include reasoning tokens. Tool calls 6 (1 failed, recovered). Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run
- Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
- Same setup: GPT-6.1 Sol (openai/gpt-6.1-sol, effort default (no reasoning-effort override) · thinking on) via
Codex CLI 0.163.0 (codex exec --json), cloud. - It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. All 13 hidden unittest cases pass (git headers and tab timestamps, omitted counts, offset search with carry, +1 before -1, +/-50 limit, no match before previous hunk, no fuzz, no-newline markers, CRLF content and blank context lines, create/delete, failing create/delete/modify, atomic multi-file failure, malformed diffs and unsafe paths).
- Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

Sections. A diff contains one or more file sections. A section starts with a line `--- <old path>` immediately followed by `+++ <new path>`, then one or more hunks. Any other line outside a hunk (e.g. `diff --git ...`, `index ...`, free text) is ignored. Each file appears in at most one section.\n2. Paths. Cut the path at the first TAB (anything after it, such as a timestamp, is ignored). If the path starts with `a/` or `b/`, remove that prefix. The path is relative to `root`. An absolute path or a path with a `..` component raises `PatchError`. The path used for a section is the `+++` path, or the `---` path when `+++` is `/dev/null`.\n3. Create / delete. `--- /dev/null` creates a new file (`PatchError` if it already exists; missing parent directories are created). `+++ /dev/null` deletes the file: its hunk's removed lines must equal the whole file exactly. Any other section modifies an existing file (`PatchError` if it does not exist).\n4. Hunks. Header: `@@ -<old start>[,<old count>] +<new start>[,<new count>] @@` followed by optional text. An omitted count means 1. Body lines start with ` ` (context), `-` (removed) or `+` (added). A completely empty line inside a hunk counts as a context line whose content is empty. The line `\\ No newline at end of file` means the line just before it has no trailing newline. If the number of context+removed lines differs from the old count, or context+added lines differs from the new count, raise `PatchError`.\n5. Matching. A file is a sequence of lines, each including its `\\n` (the last line may lack it). The hunk's old lines (context + removed, in order) must equal consecutive file lines exactly, including whether the final line has a newline. `\\r` is ordinary content. No fuzz: context is never ignored.\n6. Position. Hunks of a file are applied in order to the progressively patched content. Let `base` = `old start - 1` (or `old start` when old count is 0, meaning \"insert after that line\") plus the net number of lines added by earlier hunks of this file. A hunk's expected index (0-based) is `base` plus the previous hunk's offset (0 for the first hunk), where a hunk's offset = the index where it actually matched minus its own `base`. If the old lines do not match at the expected index, try the expected index +1, -1, +2, -2, ... up to +/-50 and use the first that matches. A hunk may never match at an index before the end of the previous hunk's new lines. No match -> `PatchError`.\n7. Atomic. If anything fails (malformed diff, missing file, mismatch, bad path), raise `PatchError` and leave every file and directory under `root` exactly as it was: nothing modified, created or deleted.\n8. Result. On success return a dict mapping each section's path (after rule 2) to `\"created\"`, `\"modified\"` or `\"deleted\"`. A diff with no sections raises `PatchError`.\n\"\"\"Apply unified diffs.\"\"\"\nimport os, re\n\n\nclass PatchError(Exception):\n pass\n\n\ndef apply_patch(diff_text, root):\n lines = diff_text.splitlines()\n result = {}\n i = 0\n while i < len(lines):\n if lines[i].startswith(\"--- \") and i + 1 < len(lines) and lines[i + 1].startswith(\"+++ \"):\n path = lines[i + 1][4:].strip()[2:]\n full = os.path.join(root, path)\n content = open(full).read().splitlines()\n i += 2\n while i < len(lines) and lines[i].startswith(\"@@\"):\n m = re.match(r\"@@ -(\\d+),(\\d+) \\+(\\d+),(\\d+) @@\", lines[i])\n start = int(m[1]) - 1\n i += 1\n old, new = [], []\n while i < len(lines) and lines[i][:1] in (\" \", \"-\", \"+\"):\n if lines[i].startswith(\"--- \"):\n break\n t, s = lines[i][0], lines[i][1:]\n if t in \" -\":\n old.append(s)\n if t in \" +\":\n new.append(s)\n i += 1\n if content[start:start + len(old)] != old:\n raise PatchError(f\"hunk failed in {path}\")\n content[start:start + len(old)] = new\n with open(full, \"w\") as f:\n f.write(\"\\n\".join(content) + \"\\n\")\n result[path] = \"modified\"\n else:\n i += 1\n return result\n", "exit_code": 0, "status": "completed"}}
