Summary
Exact prompt
This repository (toolbelt, CommonJS, Node 20) has a Jest test suite: 60 tests in 9 files under test/, plus jest.config.js and test/setup.js. Migrate the whole suite from Jest to Vitest. Vitest 3 is already installed in node_modules (there is no network access, so do not install packages). When fully done: `npx vitest run` passes all 60 tests with none skipped or removed, there are no remaining uses of the jest global or Jest APIs, Jest is removed from package.json and its config is deleted, and `npm test` runs Vitest. Keep the library code in src/ unchanged. We will do this in three working sessions with breaks in between. In THIS session, set up Vitest (config incl. the @/ path alias, the setup file with the custom matcher, package.json scripts) and migrate only the tests in test/text/. Make sure those pass under Vitest, then stop and summarize what is left. ---- NEXT SEGMENT (after idle gap, --resume) ---- I'm back from my break. Continue the migration: in this session migrate the tests in test/time/ to Vitest and make sure they pass. Then stop and summarize what is left. ---- NEXT SEGMENT (after idle gap, --resume) ---- Back again. Finish the migration: migrate test/services/, remove Jest completely (dependency, config, any leftover jest APIs), make `npm test` run Vitest, and confirm `npx vitest run` passes all 60 tests with none skipped.
Migrate a Jest test suite (~300 tests) to Vitest autonomously. Inject 10-minute pauses every 30 minutes to simulate a human stepping away. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).
Success criteria: 100% tests pass under Vitest; no skipped tests added; record cache-read/write tokens.
Setup notes: Synthetic CommonJS library 'toolbelt' with 60 Jest 29 tests (fake timers, jest.mock factories, spyOn, requireActual, snapshots incl. inline, test.each tables, done callbacks, custom matcher, moduleNameMapper). Vitest 3 preinstalled, no network. Run as 3 segments of one Claude Code session joined by --resume, with 70-minute idle gaps (longer than the 1h prompt-cache TTL Claude Code uses) to emulate a human stepping away. Scale-down of the scouted 300-test case. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Idle gaps between turns were simulated (not real wall-clock waits). Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-opus-5.5: $1.254455. Score: 7/7. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.
Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

"result": "Vitest is set up and the three `test/text/` files are migrated. `npx vitest run` passes all 25 tests in that folder. `npm test` currently runs Vitest and then Jest on the remaining folders, and all 60 tests pass: 25 under Vitest and 35 under Jest. Nothing is committed, and `src/` is unchanged.\n\n## Done this session\n\n- **`vitest.config.mjs`** (new): maps `@/` to `src/`, uses the node environment, loads `test/setup.js` before tests, and turns on `clearMocks`. It finds `test/**/*.test.js` but temporarily skips `test/time/**` and `test/services/**`.\n- **`test/setup.js`**: the custom `toBeSlug` matcher now registers through Vitest's `expect`.\n- **`test/text/*.test.js`**:\n - Each file now imports `describe`/`it`/`test`/`expect` from `vitest`.\n - `require()` became `import`. This is needed because Vitest doesn't apply the `@/` alias to `require()`, and `vi.mock` only works with imports. I also changed `format.test.js` to use `@/text` instead of the relative path.\n - In `slugify.test.js`, test names used Jest's `%p` placeholder, which Vitest doesn't support. I changed it to `%j`, so names read like `slugify(\"Hello World\") -> \"hello-world\"`.\n- **Snapshot file**: Vitest names snapshots differently (`template > fills placeholders 1`), so it saved new copies and marked the Jest ones as obsolete. The new contents match the old ones exactly. I deleted the old entries and re-ran: the snapshots are now compared, with none written or obsolete. The inline snapshot passed without any change.\n- **`package.json`**: `test` is `vitest run && jest` for now, with `test:vitest` and `test:jest` to run each one alone. I moved `vitest` from `dependencies` to `devDependencies`. I edited the root entry in `package-lock.json` by hand to match, since `npm install` can't run without network access.\n- **`jest.config.js`**: now only covers `test/time` and `test/services`. I removed its setup file because that file now imports from Vitest and only the slugify test uses the matcher.\n\n## What's left\n\n**Session 2: `test/time/`** (3 files)\n- Replace `jest.fn`, `jest.spyOn`, `jest.useFakeTimers`/`useRealTimers`, `advanceTimersByTime(Async)`, `runAllTimers(Async)` and `setSystemTime` with their `vi.*` versions.\n- `retry.test.js` has a test that uses a `done` callback. Vitest doesn't support those, so it needs to become a Promise or `async` test.\n- Change the `require` to `import`, including the relative path in `duration.test.js`.\n- Remove `test/time/**` from `exclude` in the Vitest config and from Jest's `roots`.\n\n**Session 3: `test/services/`** (3 files), then cleanup\n- `users.test.js`: change `jest.mock(...)` to `vi.mock(...)`. It must use imports, not `require`, for the mocks to apply. The automock of `@/services/http` needs checking, because Vitest's automocking behaves a little differently.\n- `logger.test.js`: `jest.requireActual` becomes `await vi.importActual(...)`. The timers and spies change as in session 2.\n- `http.test.js`: `jest.spyOn(global, 'fetch')` becomes `vi.spyOn`.\n- Cleanup:\n - Delete `jest.config.js` and the `exclude` list.\n - Set `\"test\": \"vitest run\"` and remove the `test:jest`/`test:vitest` scripts.\n - Remove `jest` from `devDependencies` and from the root entry in `package-lock.json`.\n - Grep for any remaining `jest` references.\n - Confirm `npx vitest run` reports 60 passing and none skipped.\n\n`package-lock.json` will still list Jest's packages after that cleanup, since they can't be pruned offline. The next time someone has network access, they should run `npm install` to tidy the lockfile.",

Nothing is committed yet, and `src/` is unchanged.\n\n## Done this session\n\n- **All three files**: they now import from `vitest`, and `require` became `import`. `duration.test.js` now uses `@/time` instead of the relative path.\n- **`debounce.test.js` and `retry.test.js`**: every `jest.*` call became `vi.*` (`fn`, `spyOn`, fake timers, `advanceTimersByTime(Async)`, `runAllTimers(Async)`, `setSystemTime`). Nothing else needed changing. That includes the test that spies on `setTimeout` to check the exponential backoff delays (`[10, 20]`), which passes as written.\n- **The `done` callback test** in `retry.test.js`: Vitest doesn't support `done`, so I rewrote it as an async test. It starts `sleep(500)`, advances the clock 500ms, then awaits the promise. If `sleep` never resolved, the test would still fail by timing out. I dropped \"(done callback)\" from its name since it no longer applies.\n- **Configs**: `test/time/**` is out of the Vitest `exclude` list, and Jest's `roots` now only covers `test/services`.\n\n## What's left (session 3)\n\n**Migrate `test/services/`** (3 files, 13 tests):\n- `users.test.js`: `jest.mock('@/services/http')` (automock) and `jest.mock('@/services/logger', factory)` become `vi.mock(...)`. The `require` calls must become `import`, or the mocks won't apply. Vitest's automock needs checking against how the tests use `http`, because it behaves a little differently from Jest's.\n- `logger.test.js`: `jest.requireActual(...)` becomes `await vi.importActual(...)`. The spies and fake timers change the same way as in this session.\n- `http.test.js`: `jest.spyOn(global, 'fetch')` becomes `vi.spyOn`.\n\n**Cleanup:**\n- Delete `jest.config.js` and the `exclude` line in `vitest.config.mjs`.\n- Set `\"test\": \"vitest run\"` and remove the `test:jest`/`test:vitest` scripts.\n- Remove `jest` from `devDependencies` and from the root entry in `package-lock.json`.\n- Grep the repo for any remaining `jest` references.\n- Confirm `npx vitest run` reports 60 passing and none skipped.\n\nThe lockfile will still list Jest's packages after that, because they can't be removed without network access. "result": "The migration is finished. `npx vitest run` and `npm test` both pass all 60 tests in 9 files, with none skipped or removed. `src/` is unchanged and nothing is committed yet.\n\n## Done this session\n\n- **`http.test.js`**: switched to imports, and `jest.spyOn(global, 'fetch')` became `vi.spyOn`.\n- **`logger.test.js`**: `jest.requireActual(...)` became a plain `import`. Nothing in that file is mocked, so it never needed `requireActual`. The spy and fake-timer calls became `vi.*`.\n- **`users.test.js`** needed a different approach:\n - **Problem:** `src/services/users.js` loads `http` and `logger` with `require()`, and Vitest's `vi.mock` only replaces modules loaded with `import`. A straight `jest.mock` \u2192 `vi.mock` swap would have left users.js calling the real modules.\n - **Fix:** the test now loads the same `require()`d copies that users.js uses and replaces their exported functions with `vi.spyOn` mocks that return nothing, the same as Jest's automock did. They're restored after the file finishes. There's a short comment in the file explaining why.\n - **Check:** the call-count assertions pass, such as \"gives up after retries\" expecting exactly 3 `getJson` calls, so users.js is hitting the mocks.\n- **Jest removed:**\n - `jest.config.js` is deleted and the temporary `exclude` list is gone from `vitest.config.mjs`.\n - `package.json` has a single script, `\"test\": \"vitest run\"`, and only `vitest` in `devDependencies`.\n - `package-lock.json` no longer has any Jest packages. Offline `npm install --package-lock-only` worked after all, so I didn't need to wait for network access.\n - Searching the repo (outside `node_modules`) finds no `jest` references left.\n\n## Changes across the three sessions you may want to know about\n\n- Test names changed in two places: `slugify(%p)` is now `slugify(%j)` because Vitest doesn't support `%p`, and the `done`-callback test in `retry.test.js` is now an async test named \"sleep resolves after the delay\".\n- The snapshot file now starts with Vitest's header and uses Vitest's key format (`template > fills placeholders 1`). The snapshot contents are identical.\n- Jest's packages are still in the local `node_modules` folder, but nothing uses them. I didn't delete them because they couldn't be reinstalled without network access. A future `npm ci` won't install them.\n\nTo commit, I'd suggest one commit covering the whole migration.
