Summary

Exact prompt

# Build the most valuable day schedule for one crew Inputs: `jobs.csv` (job_id, site, start, end, value_usd; times are HH:MM on the same day) and `rules.json` (`changeover_minutes`). Rules: - The crew does one job at a time and must do a job from its start to its end. - Between two consecutive jobs at different sites the crew needs at least `changeover_minutes` from the end of one to the start of the next. Consecutive jobs at the same site only need the next start to be at or after the previous end. - Choose the set of jobs with the highest total value. The data has exactly one best set. - what_if_value = the best total value if changeover_minutes were doubled. Write `out/schedule.json`: `{"jobs": ["<job_id>", ... in start order], "total_value": <usd>, "job_count": <int>, "what_if_value": <usd>}`. ## How this run works - Work on your own: nobody will answer questions in this task, and writing to `ask/` counts against the run. - Write only under `out/`. Create `out/` if it is missing. Inputs are synthetic; don't fetch anything from the network. - Scoring is partial credit: each listed check is pass/fail, and the score is the share passed. Numbers are compared to within 0.005 unless the task says otherwise.

Choose jobs for one crew from 22-28 timed offers across four sites. Moving between different sites needs a changeover gap; staying on one site does not. Return the unique best set and the best value if the gap doubled. Every seed is drawn so that earliest-finish-first and highest-value-first greedy rules are strictly worse than the optimum, and ignoring changeovers gives a different set. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price estimate (measured tokens x the site's price table). Run ended early: max turns reached. Stopped at its turn limit ($0.02947 over 25 turns), so it counts as a fail. Its leftover output scored 4/4 on the scorer. A run that hits its turn limit counts as a fail.

Success criteria: optimal_jobs optimal_value changeover_respected what_if_doubled_gap

Setup notes: Batch 18 case t05-crew-day-schedule (offline, synthetic inputs, seed 1329412274). Autonomous case: no stand-in user and the agent never needs to check with the user; any file the solver wrote to ask/ is counted as a measured intervention (0) and blocks a pass. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Hidden key kept outside the solver's work dir. Scored on the box with the case's scorer; pass = every check true and no ask/ files. Tools: list_files/read_file/write_file/run_shell (venice-mini-agent v1.3), web disabled. Single run, no retries. 1-min load average at scoring 0.86 (8 cores). Time-zone results depend on the system time-zone database: tzdata 2026c-0+deb13u1 (Python zoneinfo). Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via the Venice OpenAI-compatible API: same tool loop, system prompt and limits as the cases 02-25 Venice runs (max 25 turns, max 16,000 output tokens per call, temperature 0.2, Venice system prompt and web search off, per-run cost cap $0.05, thinking on (model default)). Same task text, work-dir layout and scorer as the Claude runs of this case. Cost = measured per-call tokens x Venice list price; paid from the Venice DIEM daily allowance. Run ended early: max turns reached. Stopped at its turn limit ($0.02947 over 25 turns), so it counts as a fail. Its leftover output scored 4/4 on the scorer. Harness: venice-mini-agent v1.3.1 via Venice OpenAI-compatible API (max 16,000 output tokens per call, $0.05 run cap). Score: 4/4. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured per-call tokens x Venice list price (paid from Venice DIEM allowance; Venice billing not itemized). input_tokens include cached reads. Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run

  1. Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
  2. Same setup: DeepSeek V3.2 (Venice) (venice/deepseek-v3.2, thinking on) via venice-mini-agent v1.3.1, cloud.
  3. It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: optimal_jobs optimal_value changeover_respected what_if_doubled_gap
  4. Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

"reasoning_content": "Now I need to solve the scheduling problem. Let's first parse the data and think about the algorithm. We have jobs with start and end times, values, and sites. The crew can do one job at a time, must do a job from start to end. Between jobs at different sites, need at least changeover_minutes (60) from end of previous to start of next. Between jobs at same site, next start must be >= previous end (no extra changeover). Goal: maximize total value.\n\nThis is a weighted interval scheduling with additional constraints about site changeover. We can treat each job as an interval with weight = value_usd. We need to select a subset of non-overlapping intervals respecting changeover constraints.\n\nWe can sort jobs by end time, then use DP: dp[i] = max value using jobs up to i (including i or not). For each job i, find previous job j that ends before start of i minus changeover if sites differ, or before start if same site.\n\nBut we also need to consider that changeover depends on the previous job's site. So DP state might need to include last site? Actually we can compute for each job i, the latest job j that can precede i given the changeover requirement. That depends on j's site and i's site. So we need to compute for each job i, for each possible previous job j, whether j can precede i. That's O(n^2). n=27, manageable.\n\nWe can compute dp[i] = max(dp[i-1], value[i] + max_{j compatible} dp[j]) where j compatible means j.end <= i.start - (changeover if j.site != i.site else 0). We need to track the best dp[j] for each possible end time.\n\nAlternatively, we can sort by start time and compute dp[i] = max value ending at job i. Then dp[i] = value[i] + max_{j: j.end <= i.start - (changeover if j.site != i.site else 0)} dp[j]. We can precompute for each job i, the latest job j that ends before i.start - changeover (worst case). But we need to consider same site case where changeover=0. So we need to consider two categories: same site and different site.\n\nWe can maintain two arrays: bestSameSite[s] = max dp value for jobs ending at site s up to time t. But times are continuous.\n\nBetter: Since n is small, we can do DP with O(n^2). Let's implement.\n\nFirst parse times to minutes from midnight. Let's write Python script. Let's create a temporary script to compute optimal schedule. Let's first list files to see if there's any existing code.",

We need to maximize total value.\n\nWe have jobs with start/end times in HH:MM format. Need to parse them to minutes since midnight. Then we need to find optimal subset of jobs respecting ordering and changeover constraints.\n\nWe can sort jobs by end time, then use DP: dp[i] = max value ending with job i (or earlier). Transition: for each job i, we can either skip it (dp[i] = dp[i-1]), or take it and add value plus dp[j] where j is the latest job that ends before start_i minus appropriate changeover time.\n\nBut changeover depends on site of previous job. So we need to consider state including last site? Actually we need to know if previous job site equals current job site to determine required gap. That suggests DP with dimension of last job index, but we also need to know site of last job. However we can incorporate changeover into feasibility check: when considering transition from job j to job i, we need to ensure that start_i >= end_j + changeover if sites differ, else start_i >= end_j.\n\nThus we can do DP over sorted jobs by end time: dp[i] = max value achievable ending with job i. For each i, we consider all j < i where job j is compatible with i (i.e., end_j + changeover (if sites differ) <= start_i). Then dp[i] = max(dp[j] + value_i) over compatible j, also we can start with job i alone (dp[i] = value_i). Answer is max over all dp[i].\n\nBut we also need to reconstruct the sequence. We can store predecessor array.\n\nWe also need to compute what_if_value where changeover_minutes is doubled (i.e., 120 minutes). We'll run DP again with doubled changeover.\n\nLet's write Python script to solve. First, parse CSV and rules. Let's create a script.",

"reasoning_content": "The schedule fails with double changeover because J09 needs 120 min gap after J14 (different sites) but only has 75 min (570 - 495). So the schedule is invalid for double changeover. The what_if_value should be computed as the optimal total value if changeover were doubled (120 min). Our algorithm gave 5075, but we need to verify that's correct.\n\nLet's examine the jobs more carefully. We need to find optimal schedule with 60 min changeover, and optimal schedule with 120 min changeover. The DP algorithm may have bugs: it only checks compatibility with immediate predecessor, but we need to ensure the whole chain is feasible. Actually, DP with predecessor chain ensures feasibility because each step checks compatibility with immediate predecessor, and by induction the whole chain is feasible. However, we need to ensure that we consider all possible sequences, not just those ending at each job. The DP seems correct.\n\nBut we should also consider that jobs can be skipped. The DP does that.\n\nLet's manually compute some possibilities. Let's write a brute-force check for small subsets to verify DP correctness. Let's create a test script.",

"reasoning_content": "Now I need to ensure the DP algorithm is correct for the whole set. The DP algorithm I wrote is O(n^2) and should find optimal schedule. However, I need to consider that jobs must be scheduled in order of start time? Actually the crew can do jobs in any order as long as they respect feasibility constraints (gap between end of previous and start of next). The DP sorted by end time is typical for interval scheduling with weights, but we have extra constraint: gap depends on site equality. However, the DP I wrote assumes we can chain jobs if the start of later job is >= end of earlier job + gap. Since we sort by end time, we guarantee that any feasible chain respects end time ordering. That's correct because if we have two jobs i and j where i ends before j, and we schedule i before j, then j's start must be >= i's end + gap. That's fine. However, we also need to consider that we could schedule jobs in a different order than end time ordering? Suppose we have job A ends at 10, job B ends at 12, but B starts at 8 and A starts at 9. Could we schedule B before A? Yes, if B ends before A starts? Wait B ends at 12, A starts at 9, so B ends after A starts, cannot schedule B before A because A would need to start after B ends + gap. Actually feasibility requires that start of next job is after end of previous job plus gap. So if we schedule B before A, we need A.start >= B.end + gap. Since A.start=9, B.end=12, that fails. So ordering by end time is natural.\n\nBut there is nuance: we could schedule jobs that overlap in time? No, crew does one job at a time, must do job from start to end. So jobs cannot overlap. So interval scheduling.\n\nThus DP should be correct.\n\nNow I need to compute what_if_value: best total value if changeover_minutes were doubled. That's 120 minutes. I computed seq2, what_if_value = 5075. Let's verify that's correct.\n\nBut note: what_if_value is the best total value if changeover_minutes were doubled, not necessarily using the same schedule. So we need to recompute optimal schedule with changeover=120. That's what I did.\n\nLet's double-check by maybe writing a more exhaustive search (maybe using DP but also consider that we might need to consider ordering by start time? Actually DP sorted by end time is fine). However, I should also consider that we might need to consider jobs that start earlier but end later? Sorting by end time is standard for weighted interval scheduling.\n\nLet's implement a more robust DP that also tracks the previous job's site to compute gap correctly. But my current DP uses gap_needed computed pairwise; that's fine because we only compare consecutive jobs in the chain (since pred[i] is the immediate predecessor). However, we need to ensure that the chain respects gap between each consecutive pair. That's satisfied because we check feasibility when linking.\n\nPotential issue: The DP may miss chains where we skip a job that ends later but starts earlier? Actually DP considers all previous jobs j < i (by sorted end time). That's sufficient.\n\nLet's test with a small random subset using brute force to verify DP correctness. We'll pick 10 random jobs and brute force all permutations (but that's huge). Instead we can brute force all subsets and then check feasibility by sorting by start time? Actually feasibility depends on order; we need to consider permutations. For small n (say 6) we can brute force permutations.\n\nLet's write a test.",

However, I need to verify that the schedule we found (J14, J09, J27, J03, J05) is indeed optimal. Let's do a quick sanity check: total value 5353 out of max possible sum 26126. Could there be a better combination? Let's compute some high-value jobs: J05 (1640), J09 (1514), J06 (1471), J26 (1378), J02 (1415), J23 (1404), J11 (1400). Many of these overlap in time. "reasoning_content": "Now I need to think about the DP algorithm correctness. The DP algorithm I wrote is O(n^2) and should be correct for weighted interval scheduling with changeover constraints. However, I need to ensure that the DP respects ordering: we need to schedule jobs in increasing start order (or at least non-decreasing end times). The DP sorted by end time is standard for interval scheduling. However, the changeover constraint depends on site equality, which is not transitive. But the DP only considers chaining from previous job j to i, and we check feasibility based on j's end time and i's start time. That should be fine.\n\nBut wait: the DP only considers chains where each job is scheduled after the previous one in the sorted order (by end time). However, we might need to consider jobs that start earlier but end later? Actually, if we sort by end time, any feasible schedule can be reordered to be non-decreasing end times (since if job A ends after job B but starts before, they cannot overlap anyway due to changeover constraints). Actually, overlapping is not allowed because you cannot do two jobs simultaneously. So any feasible schedule must have jobs in increasing start times (since start_i >= end_{i-1} + gap). That implies end_i > start_i >= end_{i-1} + gap > end_{i-1}. So ends are strictly increasing. Therefore sorting by end time is fine.\n\nThus DP should be correct.\n\nNow we need to compute what_if_value: the best total value if changeover_minutes were doubled. That is changeover = 120. We already computed that: 5075.\n\nBut we need to verify that the schedule we found for changeover=60 is still feasible with changeover=120? Actually, we need to compute optimal schedule with changeover=120, not just evaluate our schedule under double changeover. The DP algorithm already computed that: 5075.\n\nLet's double-check by running DP with changeover=120 again and maybe compare with brute force on a subset.\n\nLet's write a quick script to verify DP with changeover=120 yields 5075. We'll also compute total value of schedule we found earlier (J14, J09, J27, J03, J05) under changeover=120. That schedule may not be feasible because J09 needs 120 min gap after J14 (different sites). J14 ends at 495, J09 starts at 570, gap = 75 < 120, so infeasible. So optimal schedule with changeover=120 must be different.\n\nLet's compute DP with changeover=120 and see the schedule. We'll also compute DP with changeover=60 again to ensure we didn't make mistake. Let's do that now.",

However, I need to ensure that the DP respects the ordering: we can only schedule job i after job j if j ends before i starts minus gap. That's what we have.\n\nBut there is nuance: The gap needed depends on whether sites are same. That's accounted for.\n\nLet's test with brute force on a smaller subset to ensure DP is correct. Let's pick 10 jobs and brute force all permutations up to length 5. That's manageable. Let's write a script.",

"reasoning_content": "Now I need to verify that the schedule is indeed optimal. Let's do a more thorough check by trying to see if any other combination yields higher value. I'll write a smarter brute-force search using DP but also maybe try to see if there's a better schedule with different ordering. The DP algorithm we used is O(n^2) and should be correct for weighted interval scheduling with variable gap requirements. However, we need to ensure that sorting by end time is correct. Usually for interval scheduling with weights, sorting by end time works. Let's also test with a different DP that sorts by start time and see if we get same result. We already did that and got same result. Let's also try a DP that considers all possible orderings? That's NP-hard but we can try heuristic.\n\nBut we can also try to see if there's a schedule with 6 jobs that exceeds 5353. Let's compute the maximum possible value with 6 jobs by taking top 6 values: 1640+1514+1471+1415+1404+1400 = 8844. That's impossible due to time constraints. But maybe a combination of 6 jobs with lower individual values but higher total? Let's try a greedy approach: pick jobs that fit sequentially.\n\nLet's write a script to enumerate all feasible sequences of up to 6 jobs using pruning. We'll use recursion with time pruning. Let's do that.",
