Summary

Exact prompt

# Task: finish the JSON Schema validator `validator.py` contains `validate(schema, instance)`, a validator for a subset of JSON Schema used by our config tooling. It handles only a few keywords and gets several of those wrong. Make it implement `SCHEMA_RULES.md` exactly (rewrite freely). Keep the function name, return format and the `SchemaError` class. Python standard library only; do not install or vendor `jsonschema`. No network. The grader runs a hidden unittest suite that calls `validate` on many schema/instance pairs and compares the returned errors (as a multiset of `(path, keyword)` pairs; order does not matter, duplicates do).

Boolean-vs-number equality, integer-valued floats, type-failure short-circuit, ~0/~1 path escaping, per-member additionalProperties errors, single anyOf/oneOf errors and recursive $ref are each pinned by exact (path, keyword) multisets. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com. Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Cost shown is a list-price API-equivalent estimate (run on a ChatGPT subscription, not billed).

Success criteria: 1. All 11 hidden unittest cases pass (boolean schemas/unknown keywords, types, type short-circuit, equality, numeric and string keywords, objects and escaped paths, arrays and uniqueItems, nested paths, $ref and recursion, combinators).

Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch7 case g10-json-schema-validator (offline fixture). Prepared with batch7/prepare.sh on the shared box; only TASK.md + starting files were copied to the agent machine, hidden key/tests stayed on the box. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim on stdin. Flags: --json -s workspace-write --skip-git-repo-check --ephemeral --ignore-user-config --ignore-rules -C <workdir>. Scored on the box with the scout's scorer: `python score.py WORKDIR KEYDIR`. Single run, no retries. User-level AGENTS.md (846 bytes, sha256 83ec4fe50da8) may have been in context; --ignore-user-config does not document excluding it. Serving model not confirmed: requested via -m; the event log does not echo the serving model id. Price source is secondary (pricing.json verification='secondary', https://www.actuia.com/en/news/ai-api-pricing-in-october-2026-050-to-50-for-output/), not an official OpenAI price page. Score: 11/11. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (ChatGPT plan, nothing billed); input_tokens include cached reads; output_tokens include reasoning tokens. Tool calls 7 (2 failed, recovered). Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run

  1. Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
  2. Same setup: GPT-6.1 Sol (openai/gpt-6.1-sol, effort default (no reasoning-effort override) · thinking on) via Codex CLI 0.163.0 (codex exec --json), cloud.
  3. It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1. All 11 hidden unittest cases pass (boolean schemas/unknown keywords, types, type short-circuit, equality, numeric and string keywords, objects and escaped paths, arrays and uniqueItems, nested paths, $ref and recursion, combinators).
  4. Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

An empty list means valid. Instances are what `json.loads` produces (dict, list, str, int, float, bool, None).\n\n1. Schemas. A schema is a dict or a boolean. `true` accepts everything; `false` rejects everything with keyword `\"false\"`. Unknown keywords are ignored.\n2. Paths. The root instance has path `\"\"`; an object member adds `/<key>`, an array element adds `/<index>`. In keys, `~` is written `~0` and `/` is written `~1` (e.g. key `a/b~c` -> `/a~1b~0c`).\n3. `type`: a name or a list of names from `string`, `number`, `integer`, `boolean`, `null`, `object`, `array`. `integer` accepts ints and floats with no fractional part (`2.0`). `number` accepts ints and floats. Booleans are never numbers or integers. If `type` fails, report only that one `type` error for this schema at this location: no other keyword of the same schema object is checked there.\n4. Equality (used by `enum`, `const`, `uniqueItems`): JSON equality. `1 == 1.0`, but `true` is not equal to `1` and `false` is not equal to `0`; lists and objects compare element-wise / member-wise with the same rule.\n5. Numbers (only checked when the instance is a non-boolean number): `minimum`, `maximum` (inclusive), `exclusiveMinimum`, `exclusiveMaximum` (numbers, strict). Each failing keyword gives one error.\n6. Strings (only for strings): `minLength`, `maxLength` count Unicode code points; `pattern` passes if `re.search(pattern, value)` finds a match.\n7. Objects (only for dicts): `required` gives one error per missing name, each at the object's path with keyword `required`. `properties` validates each present member against its schema. `additionalProperties` applies to members not listed in `properties`: `false` gives one error per such member at the member's path with keyword `additionalProperties`; a schema validates each such member.\n8. Arrays (only for lists): `items` (a single schema) validates every element. `minItems`, `maxItems`. `uniqueItems: true` gives ONE error at the array's path (keyword `uniqueItems`) if any two elements are equal (rule 4).\n9. `enum` (list): error unless the instance equals one entry. `const`: error unless equal.\n10. `$ref`: `\"#\"` (the root schema) or `\"#/$defs/<name>\"` (pointer into the root schema; `~0`/`~1` unescaped in the name). The referenced schema's errors are reported at the current location. Other keywords next to `$ref` are still checked. Recursive schemas must work. A `$ref` that does not resolve raises `SchemaError`.\n11. Combinators. `allOf`: all errors of every subschema are reported. `anyOf`: if no subschema is valid, ONE error with keyword `anyOf` at this location (no sub-errors). `oneOf`: if the number of valid subschemas is not exactly 1, ONE error `oneOf`. `not`: if the subschema is valid, ONE error `not`.\n\"\"\"Minimal JSON Schema subset validator.\"\"\"\n\n\nclass SchemaError(ValueError):\n    pass\n\n\nTYPES = {\"string\": str, \"number\": (int, float), \"integer\": int, \"boolean\": bool, \"null\": type(None), \"object\": dict, \"array\": list}\n\n\ndef validate(schema, instance, path=\"\"):\n    errors = []\n    if schema is True:\n        return errors\n    t = schema.get(\"type\")\n    if t is not None:\n        names = t if isinstance(t, list) else [t]\n        if not any(isinstance(instance, TYPES[n]) for n in names):\n            errors.append({\"path\": path, \"keyword\": \"type\"})\n    if \"minimum\" in schema and isinstance(instance, (int, float)) and instance < schema[\"minimum\"]:\n        errors.append({\"path\": path, \"keyword\": \"minimum\"})\n    if \"maximum\" in schema and isinstance(instance, (int, float)) and instance > schema[\"maximum\"]:\n        errors.append({\"path\": path, \"keyword\": \"maximum\"})\n    if \"enum\" in schema and instance not in schema[\"enum\"]:\n        errors.append({\"path\": path, \"keyword\": \"enum\"})\n    if isinstance(instance, dict):\n        for name in schema.get(\"required\", []):\n            if name not in instance:\n                errors.append({\"path\": path + \"/\" + name, \"keyword\": \"required\"})\n        for k, sub in schema.get(\"properties\", {}).items():\n            if k in instance:\n                errors += validate(sub, instance[k], path + \"/\" + k)\n    if isinstance(instance, list) and \"items\" in schema:\n        for i, v in enumerate(instance):\n            errors += validate(schema[\"items\"], v, path + \"/\" + str(i))\n    for sub in schema.get(\"anyOf\", []):\n        sub_errors = validate(sub, instance, path)\n        if not sub_errors:\n            break\n        errors += sub_errors\n    return errors\n", "exit_code": 0, "status": "completed"}}
