Summary

Exact prompt

# Task: fix the async job pool The repo in your working directory (`jobpool/`) is a small async job pool. Users report: failed jobs crash the whole run, the pool sometimes hangs forever after a few failures, retry counts look off, and the pool breaks when reused. Read README.md for the intended behaviour, fix the library (you may refactor), and add tests for every bug you fix. Keep the public API (`JobPool(concurrency, retries)`, `run()`, `stats`). Don't add dependencies. No network. Run the tests with `python -m pytest -q`.

A small Python async job pool with four reported problems: failed jobs crash the run, the pool can hang after failures, retry counts are off, and reuse breaks. The agent must read the README contract, fix the library, and add tests; hidden tests check retry semantics, the deadlock on failure, and that cancellation is not swallowed. Original benchmark task written for usecaserank.com (not based on a specific public post). Headless, offline run on a reproducible fixture. Each run's notes say how its cost was measured (estimates are marked).

Success criteria: 1. Hidden test file is copied into tests/ and the full suite (visible + hidden + agent tests) runs with pytest; exit code must be 0 (120 s timeout). 2. Hidden tests check: retries means EXTRA attempts (retries=2 -> up to 3 attempts) with exact stats {ok, failed, attempts}; no deadlock/hang after several failing jobs; concurrency never exceeds the configured bound (and reaches it); the pool can be reused across separate asyncio.run() calls; asyncio.CancelledError propagates instead of being swallowed as a failure. 3. Visible tests must still pass: results returned in job order; failed jobs appear as exception instances and run() never raises. 4. The repo's tests/ must contain at least 4 test functions in total (i.e. the agent added at least 2).

Setup notes: Use Case Scout batch 3 case c01-async-pool-bugs (offline fixture). Prepared with batch3/prepare.sh; hidden key/tests kept outside the agent's work dir. Prompt = TASK.md verbatim. Scored with the scout's scorer: `bash score.sh WORKDIR`. Tools: Read/Write/Edit/Glob/Grep/Bash, web disabled. Single run, no retries. Claude Code's own reported cost for claude-opus-5.5: $0.257524. Score: pass. Cost is an ESTIMATE: measured tokens x pricing.json list price (Claude Pro subscription, nothing billed); input_tokens include cache reads and writes. Single run.

Estimated cost List-price estimate; not actually billed.

Reproduce this run

  1. Use the use case prompt on the use case page.
  2. Same setup: Claude Opus 5.5 (anthropic/claude-opus-5.5, effort default (no --effort flag) · thinking on) via Claude Code 2.1.299 (headless -p), cloud.
  3. It counts as a success only if it meets every success criterion: 1.
  4. Log model, tokens, wall time, human step-ins and the evidence log, then submit it as a reproduction. A different model? Submit a head-to-head rerun.

Instead I ran the tests with a small stand-in runner in `/tmp`. **All 12 tests pass on the fixed code; on the original code only 2 pass.** Please run real pytest once on a machine that has it.\n\n## Bugs fixed (`jobpool/__init__.py`)\n1. **Failed jobs crashed the whole run.** A job that used up all its attempts raised its error, which aborted every other job. It now returns the error object in its slot of the results list, as the README says.\n2. **The pool hung after a few failures.** A failed job never gave back its concurrency slot, so after `concurrency` failures no further jobs could start. The slot is now always released, whether the job succeeds or fails.\n3. **Retry counts were off by one.** `retries=2` made 2 attempts instead of 3. It now makes `retries + 1`. A side effect of the old bug: `retries=0` made no attempts at all and crashed. That works now too.\n4. **The pool broke when reused.** The concurrency limiter was created once when the pool was built. That tied it to the first event loop, so a second `asyncio.run(...)` failed, and slots lost to failures carried over into later runs. A fresh limiter is now created on every `run()`.\n\nTwo extra changes:\n- `JobPool(concurrency=0)` or `retries=-1` now raises `ValueError` straight away. Before, these gave a hang or no attempts.\n- **Behaviour choice for you to confirm:** `stats` is now reset at the start of each `run()` and describes only the latest run, rather than adding up across runs. The README doesn't say which it should be. If you want running totals, it's a one-line change.\n\n## Tests (`tests/test_bugs.py`)\nThere are tests for each bug above, plus: a run with more failures than slots, the concurrency limit holding when jobs fail, success on the last retry, an empty job list, and reuse both within one event loop and across several.\n\nOn the original code, most new tests fail early because of bug 1, so they don't check the hang and reuse bugs separately. I traced through those two fixes by hand but didn't confirm that their tests fail on code where only that one bug is present.",
